People may have missed this when it was publicised, since the protest coincided with (extensively reported) Shell to Sea protest in Mayo. The Wheelock family's plight has been highlighted on this site, so readers will be interested in the report on the forensic testing of Terence Wheelock's clothes. Since the Irish Times is subscription I reproduce the article here in full. read full story / add a comment

Apologists for Shell in the Corrib Gas dispute often quote the company's assurances on safety as if they were unquestionable. Shell likes to portray itself as a large company with a strong commitment to safety, especially the safety of its workers. However, continuing judgements against Shell tell a different story, as this Guardian article from yesterday shows. Some commmentators say the dismal safety record of the company shows that there is a policy within Shell of weighing up the potential cost of paying out damages for death or injury against the cost of implementing safety measures. When the former is less than the latter, Shell is prepared to put lives at risk, showing that the company's main concern is its profit margin, and that this comes a long way before woorrying about safety. read full story / add a comment

After visiting Rossport last year and learning about the Shell to Sea campaign, a friend and I wrote an article for our local press. Here is the final article (http://www.pulsetc.com/article.php?sid=3006) which was published on February 28, 2007 in the "Pulse of the Twin Cities," a weekly paper from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, u.s.a. The article ran in the print issue next to an article about a 300+ mile oil pipeline slated for construction in our state. It appears that Big Oil wants a piece of our backyard too. Read the full article about the Erris campaign and the proposed Minnesota oil pipeline at: http://www.pulsetc.com/ read full story / add a comment |
