mayo / environment / news report Friday April 13, 2007 23:30 by Shell to Sea
Today in Mayo activists from Shell to Sea disrupted the peat haulage process which has been going on since the beginning of April. In what was seen as a reconnaissance, a small group of protesters arranged to have a close look at the situation, and see if they could lock themselves on to the Iggy Madden haulage trucks as they passed. Heavy-handed Garda tactics meant that none of the attempts were successful, although some were close enough to make those involved confident that the process of stripping the peat can be stopped by peaceful direct action protest methods. read full story / add a comment

This week's Mayo Advertiser reports that Shell are very happy with the progress of peat removal from their refinery site at Bellanaboy in County Mayo, which started earlier this week. The surface of the site has to be removed before construction of the refinery can begin. The Gardaí say they are also happy with their operation, reporting that they have easily contained the demonstrations and protests. The massive Garda operation has been widely criticised, with those opposed to the Shell/Govt scheme arguing that if protesters are breaking the law they should be arrested, and if not they should not be interfered with. To date there have been no arrests in this current phase of the conflict. read full story / add a comment

The two most well known Irish hydrocarbon deposits: the Corrib field and the Dunquin prospect are collectively worth at least E400 billion euros. They contain around 33trillion cubic feet of gas and between 2.5 and 4 billion barrels of oil. The gas in the Corrib belong to Shell, Statoil and Marathon and the Dunquin prospect is totally controlled by Exxon Mobil and Providence . We will end up buying back our oil and gas and they will be charged pitiful tax rates as they can write all exploration and construction costs over the past twenty-five years against tax. How did this happen? read full story / add a comment

At 11:30 this morning, ten members of Cork Shell to Sea staged an occupation of Marathon Oil's Irish HQ in Mahon, Cork. Many of the people on the action were dressed as runners, both as a play on the company name and as an allusion to the marathon determination of the Erris communities and the campaign itself. Entry was swift, easy, and unforced. We were inside there for over half an hour before the Gardai arrived. A spirited and good-natured dialogue occurred between Cork S2S members and senior management at Marathon Oil. We left dragging our heels a little, making our departure protracted. read full story / add a comment

galway / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Monday March 26, 2007 22:38 by TD
Iggy Madden of Iggy Madden Haulage Ltd, Galway, crony, “close friend and confidante,” whatever, of shady Frank Fahey, was the target of Galway Shell to Sea’s concern this afternoon on account of the imminent removal by his firm of some 660,000 metric tonnes of blanket bog from Shell’s proposed gas refinery in Bellanaboy and dumped in a Bord Na Mona cutaway bog in Bangor Erris despite serious ecological concerns for such a venture. As karma or serendipity would have it, the great man himself was to hand when 13 Shell to Sea activists, prior to a picketing of his depot, were handing in a letter of protest to his docklands offices. Instead of hearing our plaints with a fair ear we were verbally abused, instead, and subjected to diplomacy of the bar room, redneck, kind ; “I’ll shove yer camera up yer arse” "Do ya have a job" etc, etc. So it goes. read full story / add a comment

Protesters from Dublin Shell to Sea managed to evade the heavy security at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis this morning. A number of activists held a protest at the main door of the Ard Fheis venue inside the City West complex. A banner was unfurled and one protester spoke to conference delegates through a megaphone, pointing out that the people of Ireland were being forced by the government to watch as their natural resources were handed over to Shell and Statoil, with nothing coming back, while the people of Erris have to put up with the severe degradation of their environment and unacceptable risks to their lives. The protesters, some of whom were wearing masks of Bertie Ahern and Noel Dempsey, were soon surrounded by Gardaí and security guards. read full story / add a comment
