Syttende mai (May 17th) is celebrated by Norwegians in Dublin to mark the anniversary of the signing of the country’s first constitution, and independence from Sweden. Of all the countries in the in the world, Norway has one of the highest standards of living. To a great extent, this is because of the country’s natural resources, which are carefully managed through the state company Statoil. Statoil owns a chunk of the Corrib gas field and is working on getting more gas from under the Sea off the west coast, so Ireland's natural resources are also playing their part in raising the living standards of the Norwegian people. Once again this year, activists from Shell to Sea joined in the festivities, distributing flags and leaflets to the Norwegian people and raising awareness of the fact that the Irish establishment are not doing such a good job of looking after our natural resources. read full story / add a comment

On the 18th of May Dublin Shell to Sea is going to escalate its campaign against Shell’s command centre – Corrib house on Leeson Street with another day of action starting at 7.30 am sharp. This attempt to shut down Shell’s HQ, like our last day of action (http://www.indymedia.ie/article/82200), is being called to highlight the incredible theft of our natural resources that totals 51 billion euros in the Corrib field alone. This is only possible with your help; we encourage everyone to come along. read full story / add a comment

Today was the official opening of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. The idea is to provide a civilian oversight of the Gardaí and provide a way for people to make complaints about the police without going through the Guards themselves. Unfortunately, only invited members of the corporate media were allowed into the opening, so this indymedia report is confined to the outside of the building. Amazingly, the Gardaí tried to stop me taking pictures on the pavement outside, and even tried to block the camera. Eventually after trying to interrogate me they stopped and sulked from a distance. I think they realised that they couldn't arrest me outside the GSOC offices on their opening day, but they were certainly considering it for a while... read full story / add a comment

They will meet with Willie this Thursday 10th May at 12.00 outside St Nicholas’s Church and all are welcome to attend. The Goldman prize is internationally renowned. It is the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for the environment. Willie was awarded the €93,000 prize in a ceremony in San Francisco two weeks ago. During his US trip he had the opportunity to put his case to leading US political figures. It was awarded in recognition of the Shell to Sea Campaign, which opposes the controversial ‘Corrib Gas’ project in Erris Co. Mayo. read full story / add a comment

The May and June AGM period of Shell Annual meetings in London and Amsterdam should be the specific annual period where the focus should be on giving the Irsh public factual and visual information on the record of Shell worldwide as it struggles to find its feet in Irish waters. This should be the goal in every activity during this period so that people come to know once again why there is opposition to Shell in Mayo, and Ireland is in union with other Shell- suffering comminities who will be making their voices heard at this time. At the very least lots of placard information and messages. read full story / add a comment

As the General Election looms, and the EPA hearing draws to a close, Áine Ryan draws a few conclusions about the current state of play in Corrib saga in the current edition of the Mayo news. She points out that Shell have no approved route for their pipeline, and when they come up with one (if they ever do) they will have to go through the whole process again. They also have to deal with the fact that politicians like Martin Ferris and Tommy Broughan could well be in the government next month, and the Shell to Sea campaign, although shaken by police brutality, has not gone away... read full story / add a comment
