national / rights, freedoms and repression / opinion/analysis Monday June 22, 2009 23:40 by John
While in Cobh today, we also met some of the local fishermen who still manage to work despite years of depredation by the pharmaceutical industry in the harbour. We passed on to them copies of this letter printed here which we encourage anyone else with any contacts whatsoever in the fishing community to use to communicate to the the situation to other fishermen. I am also looking for information regarding the state of the fishing industry in Ireland over the last 60 years. I am coming to understand that our fishing rights have been given away as surely as our oil and gas over a longer period. I am convinced that these issues have to be linked in the common consciousness. A significant difference being that fishing, done right is a renewable resource. It ain't being done right now. The Sea is being f**ked and so are the fishermen. If only ye could stand together lads. read full story / add a comment

A Shell to Sea kayaker who paddled out from the shore near the Rossport Solidarity Camp was arrested and detained by Shell Security personnel at about 5pm today, Tue 16th June. Two security guards waded into the water, captured the man in his canoe and dragged him to shore and onto the Shell site, where he was forcibly held until Gardaí handcuffed him and detained him in a Garda van. Despite the fact that the captured man was given no reason for his arrest and detention by either Shell or the Gardai; Garda Sgt. Kieran Lavelle MY2 denied later that the man was arrested at all, but that he was being held 'for his own safety'. read full story / add a comment

Joe Higgins MEP (Socialist Party) has publicly condemned the sinking of the Iona Isle fishing boat this morning near Rossport. This boat, owned by Pat O'Donnell, a prominent Shell to Sea activist in Mayo and fifth generation fisherman, was boarded by four masked men in the dead of night. They held Pat and his crewman hostage for an hour and a half, before leaving them stranded on a sinking boat. The fishermen only barely managed to inflate their lifeboat in time to escape alive before the boat sank. read full story / add a comment
