Heather at a tar sands protest in Toronto (from ruckus.org)
international / environment / news report Monday November 16, 2009 10:23 by Andrew   image 1 image   audio 1 audio file
As conventional sources of oil become rarer the energy corporations have started the mass extraction of oil from the tar sands of Alberta. This is a filthy process that involves vast open cast mines, tailing ponds that can be seen from space and the use of huge quantities of water and energy making it a major cause of climate change. On Saturday Heather Milton Lightening of the Indigenous Environmental Network spoke to a national Shell to Sea meeting in Dublin about this struggle (last night she spoke in Inver, Erris). This is a 50 minute recording of that talk and the discussions that followed it. read full story / add a comment

An Bord Pleanala announced on Tuesday a deferral of the decision on the Corrib Gas onshore Pipeline, citing 14 conditions which cast huge doubt over claims from Shell that the project is safe. In the third delay on the decision regarding this pipeline, which was originally due on August 10, the Bord have highlighted hugely important safety concerns which are at the heart of the community's objections to the imposition of the Corrib Gas Project on the area. read full story / add a comment

This morning An Bord Pleanala have announced that they are deferring the decision on the onshore section of the Corrib Gas pipeline. Bord Pleanala says that approximately 5.6km (or 62% of the whole onshore pipeline) is considered unacceptable because of its proximity to dwelling houses located within its hazard range should a pipeline failure occur. See the latest RTE news report on this here: http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/1103/corrib.html or Irish Times report: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1103/...0.htm
More on the Bord Pleanala decision will follow later, this is a report on yesterdays People's Forum in Belmullet and Minister's Forum in Corran Buí. read full story / add a comment

Early this morning the 22 October, four Shell to Sea campaigners entered the field in Glengad where Shell is working (the same field where work was stopped by a digger-occupier yesterday- http://www.indymedia.ie/article/94519). If adversity breeds empathy and solidarity it was certainly on display yesterday in Shop Street, when after their participation in the protest march against the ongoing government attacks on the vulnerable and voiceless in Irish society, 6 Shell to Sea stalwarts joined forces with activists with the Free Palestine Campaign to express solidarity and empathy with the Palestinian people and their revulsion at what Gazans were subjected to last Dec/Jan - at what President of the UN General Assembly Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann called "genocide". read full story / add a comment

On Monday 28th September 2009, 18 Shell to Sea campaigners with strong links to the Rossport Solidarity Camp appeared at a special sitting of Belmullet District Court to answer charges relating to protests staged on land and at Sea in May and June of this year at the Shell site, Glengad.

Six of the cases were adjourned to November 11th because of High Court proceedings initiated by those six, to have charges withdrawn. One other case was withdrawn by the state. One individual was convicted and fined, another plead guilty and had the charge struck out. Seven others had the charges against them dismissed. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday in Belmullet District court, Maura Harrington was jailed for the fourth time this year over her opposition to Shell's plans in Mayo. Judge Mary Devins sentenced Ms Harrington to 3 months in jail for assaulting an employee of IRMS, and 3 months for trespassing in a farmyard close to the landfall site in Glengad on June 19 2008. Ms Harrington was also fined a total of €1000. This incident occurred shortly after Shell began drafting in security into the area and they had begun filming people in the locality (it hadn't been discovered these were working for IRMS at that stage).

Yesterday, marked one year to the day that Maura Harrington began her hungerstrike which lasted 11 days until the Solitaire left Irish waters. read full story / add a comment
