Over the past number of weeks, Ógra Shinn Féin have initiated a campaign to paint northern post boxes back to their rightful shade of green. Scenes you won't see on the Irish TV news. Police -many with no visible ID- pepper sprayed and attacked protesters. Nearly 100 arrests were made. Activists (many marching against the Afghan war) claimed that the arrests meant people would be held for the rest of the convention. Some protesters who were sitting down were arrested - photographed and released with no charge. read full story / add a comment

Gardai have illegally detained two protestors in the back of one of their vans as they continue to use 'force' to police protests in Glengad Co. Mayo today. People were kicked, punched and dragged by the hair by Gardai as they attempted to break a protest at the gates of the Shell compound in Glengad this morning, according to initial reports. Solidarity Campers and local residents attempted this morning to blockade the Glengad compound, in another protest to show how unwanted the Corrib Gas project is in the 'receiving community' in NW Mayo. read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea protesters stepped up their campaign against Shell’s offshore pipe-laying operations by mounting a picket at the Shell compound, Glengad, Erris Co Mayo, Ireland. A daily picket was maintained at the Bellanaboy refinery site from the summer of 2005 till recently. This is the first time since 2005 that a picket has been staged at the Shell 'Security Zone' in Glengad. The picket started at 7am and lasted till 9am, during which time Shell security, who were ready to leave after their overnight shift, remained on site for the duration. Shell workers arriving for work at the site remained outside. The picket was stood down voluntarily at 9am and the workers left and entered the compound consequently. read full story / add a comment

Have a look at these two short videos from youtube. They show very similar instances - in the first one a police officer in New York City (Officer Patrick Pogan) assaults a protester at a critical mass bike ride, and in the second a member of the Garda Siochána (Garda Kevin O'Connor) assaults a protester at an anti-Shell protest in Mayo.
