Republican Sinn Féin led the Irish contingent at the Glasgow Trade Union Council march on its 150th year to celebrate May Day. The march was held in Glasgow on Sunday, 4 May 2008. Prior to commencement, we were approached by a trade union steward and informed by her that the police had raised concerns about one of our flags, the Starry Plough.

Why not take this great opportunity to get up to speed on the injustice of the debt problem in the Global South?

This learning evening will provide participants with an improved understanding of the debt problem in the Global South, including a full update on the current situation and lots of ideas of what can be done from Ireland to tackle the problem. Discussion will focus on responsibilities in the debt crisis and the current focus of the global debt cancellation movement.

Ireland’s charities will require additional financial and infrastructural support from Government to help them prepare for new regulatory requirements set out in the Charities Bill 2007, a conference was told on Thursday.

Delegates from a cross-section of charities put their position in relation to the bill, which is currently being passed through the Dáil, to the Minister of State in the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs, Pat Carey TD, at a national conference organised by The Wheel, a leading support and representative network for the community and voluntary sector in Ireland.

TEEU rejects treaty over real practical concerns in relation to workers rights. The premise of their argument is the ambiguity surrounding the right to industrial action for those working in 'goods and services'.

Other concerns include the acceptance of unequal wages for migrant workers in the 'goods and services' industry. Several judgements from the European Court have fallen in favour of Employers.

The court recently found that a Polish subcontractor operating in Germany was entitled to pay workers less than half the agreed minimum wage for the construction sector, because the right to provide unrestricted services took priority over collective wage agreements.

These are concrete valid reasons that highlight how Lisbon is a bad deal for workers across Europe.
