It's being reported by the he Garda Ombudsman that a man has been found dead in a garda cell in Dublin.

The man was arrested for a public order offence on Tuesday evening and held at Tallaght Garda Station where he was found dead at 9.30 last night.

Greyhound protection campaigners are holding demonstrations outside various venues on Dara O'Briain's UK tour after a racing dog, part "owned" by the Irish comedian, was fatally injured during a race at Dublin's Harolds Cross Stadium. The BBC is also being targetted, as the race was featured in an episode of its Three Men in a Boat programme, which amounted to a promotion of the cruel so-called "sport" of greyhound racing and where no mention of the death of the dog was made. read full story / add a comment

One of the world’s greatest composers, Russian born Sofia Gubaidulina will bring her world renowned contemporary music to the Drogheda Arts Festival on the evening of the 1st May.

Gubaidulina (pronounced ‘goo-bye-DOO-lee-nah) who is visiting Ireland for the first time, will attend a composer portrait concert at St Peter’s Church, Drogheda at 8pm on 1 May 2010 in which highly acclaimed performers including Ivan Monighetti, the Dublin Guitar Quartet, Malachy Robinson, the Heath Quartet, The Oriel Trio and Dermot Dunne will perform a range of her works.

The concert is the latest of several high profile art music events organised by the Louth Contemporary Music Society, to bring world renowned composers to Ireland, previously having successfully featured, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Valentyn Silvestov.

A large number of people turned out at 2pm on Saturday, 17 April, for the Palestinian Prisoners’ Day demonstration outside the Israeli embassy in Dublin. The protest was organised conjointly by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) and éirígí (the socialist republican party formed in 2006), and the focus was on a call for the release of ALL Palestinian political prisoners imprisoned by the Israeli State - those 'convicted' in Israeli Military courts and those interned without trial under the 'Administrative Detention' regime.

The Shell manager who accepted the latest load of letters from objectors to the Shell project just last week turns out to be the son of a (former) Labour politician. A politician who always campaigned hard on Corrib, but on behalf of the multi-national, not his constituents.

So it was a bit of a surprise to see Jerry Cowley, wealthy Barrister and GP, and once supposedly a supporter of the Shell to Sea campaign, sign up for Labour yesterday. read full story / add a comment
