Those of us whose holidays or vacations are generally spent eating healthy salad, considering the holistic benefits of poverty which reduce alcohol consumption & welcome soft slumber - are often left with only two things to do. The sensible : decorate the gaff. The frustrating : read about other people's holidays. Oh, if I had enough for a decent roller and emulsion I'd have enough for a six pack & oriental massage on my local beach. So instead I offer to the reader a miscellany of links covering former President Clinton's surprise day trip to North Korea. read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea campaigners Maura Harrington and Niall Harnett were sentenced to four and eight months in jail respectively at Bellmulet district court today. Both protesters have been convicted for taking action as part of a campaign of peaceful civil disobedience against the ill-fated Corrib Gas Project. Maura was given her four month sentence under Section 8 of the Public Order Act; 'failing to comply with the directions of a Garda'. The sentence was handed down in relation to an incident that occurred duing a protest at Shell's 'landfall' compound gate on 30th August 2008. Niall was sentenced to eight months in relation to two separate incidents. He was given a four month sentence under Section 8 of the Public order act, and another four months under Section 2, for the supposed assault of a Garda. read full story / add a comment

Element Six/De Beers’ plan to shut their Shannon plant, sacking 370 workers, and move production elsewhere is a disgusting stab in the back of the workers whose hard work has made them billions in profits over the years. After huge sacrifices, including working part time on the promise that this would save jobs, the company now want to pack up and jump ship, with only a pittance of a redundancy. The entire cost of the redundancy scheme to the company is only €6.6m, about one week’s turnover for the factory, according to the Irish Independent! Note: This article was written before management started discussing an "alternative" proposal saving "some" jobs, probably only a stay of execution, and demanding much reduced wages and terms and conditions. Therefore, the need for a fight still very much stands. read full story / add a comment

Mr Celerino Castillo, known as "Cele" to his friends, was once an agent of the DEA, that US secret service branch which supposedly fights the war to end production of drugs like cocaine and heroin from the jungles of Latin America to the dusty mountains of Afghanistan. Whilst working for the DEA he saw with his own little eyes how another chap working for the DEA & CIA, Mr Luis Posada Carriles, ran guns out of El Salvador's "llopango" base, he also casebooked murders by CIA "assets". "Cele" not only noted all the little details down : he did his best to tell the world. His testimony would form part of the backdrop to what is now known as the "Iran Contra" affair which as it name suggests spun a web from the mountains of central America, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua to Iran via the US covert military machine, SOA, Pentagon & of course the regime of Reagan, Bush senior, Rumsfeld, Cheney etc. read full story / add a comment

BBC News has this weekend added a piece on Hugo Chavez's "revolutionary reading list" to its feature pages. It's a curious article whose timing four months after the launch of the list appears to say little and omit plenty. We are told how there are queues of people in Caracas awaiting a free copy of French 19th century author Victor Hugo's masterpiece "Les Miserables" (in Spanish translation). One happy fellow tells the local BBC chap he's seen the movie and now wants to read the book. I wonder has he ever tried to sing the songs and get on a talent competition? But this curious space filler (all the more curious because in internet news one doesn't have to fill space) prompts me to quickly cast an eye over the efforts of South America to banish illiteracy. read full story / add a comment

At 10.00am management from Thomas Cook arrived at shops in Dublin to enforce closure. Members refused and are now occupying the shops. The context to this dispute is a company that seeks to consolidate and increase profits through the closure of more than 100 shops, the closures in Dublin fly in the face of these shops making more than £400 million profit during 2008. read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin Dublin has condemned the attack on a statue commemorating Irish Patriot Seán Russell. Unknown individuals painted Nazi flags on the base of the monument late on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and also poured red paint over it. The new bronze memorial to Seán Russell,a veteran of the Easter Rising and IRA chief of staff during the bombing campaign launched in London in 1939, stands in Fairview Park in Dublin and was only recently unveiled by the National Graves Association following the destruction of a previous memorial by vandals in 2004. read full story / add a comment

The abject disregard of the Irish political elite for Ireland's neutrality has been demonstrated by the routine transit of US military planes and troops through Shannon Airport for most of this decade. With the re-run of the Lisbon Treaty referendum we are now being asked to accept EU promises that it will not affect or prejudice Ireland's traditional policy of military neutrality. But the ongoing support of the Irish government for US-led NATO exercises around the world clearly shows that we cannot trust our leaders to uphold Irish neutrality, with or without the non-binding decisions that have been tagged onto the Treaty in an attempt to have it accepted by the people of Ireland. read full story / add a comment
