END the pathetic conditions for over 20 animals, including a Pregnant donkey in FUNTASIA’s noisy rooftop Petting Farm.
A noisy amusement and casino establishment in Bettystown has airlifted (by CHERRYPICKER) over 20 animals onto its roof in an effort to attract more clientele to its arcade and boost profits at 3 euro a head.
Funtasia last week got many of these animals from Jesse Callaghan, a farmer in Lunderstown, Duleek to use as a spectacle for the roof farm on their two story building. Chicken wire, plywood and a fully cemented roof is all that was provided by way of accommodation for a variety of animals including:
A pregnant Donkey in poor condition.... read full story / add a comment

This article deals with the coup in Honduras. Written by José Antonio Gutiérrez, it was translated into English by Molly Mew. Full article text at link. pc

The flashing sabers have once again shown their edge in Latin America: the coups d'etat and destabilization processes orchestrated from Washington have succeeded in countries where governments are implementing reform that may be uncomfortable for the digestion of the hemispheric elite-Venezuela 2002; Haiti 2004, Bolivia 2008. This time Honduras' turn has come, a country whose president Manuel Zelaya was overthrown by the military and exiled to Costa Rica. While Zelaya was kidnapped by soldiers in Congress a letter written by Zelaya was read (which turned out to be false) in which he renounced his position as president. At the same time, and while several MPs complained that the conduct of the president put at risk the "rule of law" and accused him of multiple violations of the Constitution real and imaginary, he was removed from office, which was assumed by the Congress president , Roberto Micheletti (who is also from Zelaya's Liberal Party). read full story / add a comment

Protestant abuse victims must also be heard
Irish Times, Wednesday, July 1, 2009

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2009/0701/1....html

OPINION: Victims of Protestant prejudice and State neglect are at a disadvantage, writes DEREK LEINSTER

YOU DON’T have to be a Catholic to be listened to as a victim of institutional abuse, but it seems to help. That is my experience as a Protestant victim of institutional neglect. Like all sufferers, I am a victim of prejudice.

It was prejudice that forced my mother into the Bethany Home in Orwell Road, Rathgar in 1941 for the “social sin” (as one cleric put it) of being pregnant out of wedlock. To add to her burden, her gestating baby had a Catholic father. Marriage in those circumstances was out, and so was I, fostered out to a dysfunctional family in Wicklow where I was beaten black and blue and (I mention it since it seems to be what Irish people are most interested in) sexually molested. read full story / add a comment

Europeans were mostly responsible for the museum industry as much as the grand symphonic orchestras, opera and zoos. They used these things at first not out of any wish to educate nor illuminate in the laudable manner of contemporary interpretative centres but to solve three important 19th century bourgois problems.

1) how to gainfully employ people who really smellt bad but are now represented as Indiano Jones.
2) how to reclaim supposedly civilised history from the church of Rome.
3) how to offer vandals like Lord Elgin bequest options and subsequent relief from death taxes. read full story / add a comment
