Eluana Englaro has died peacefully this evening Tomorrow Italy's progressives and secularists will demonstrate against Berlusoni's unconstitutional decree attempting to ensure a woman who was in a coma since 1992 continues in that vegetative state. In Berlusconi's words :- "She is alive enough to get pregnant". Leaving one only to wonder who would have fathered her child and what would have been the morailty of such an act. However, the 11th president of the Italian Republic Goirgio Napolitano refused to sign Berlusconi's decree deeming it to be unconstitional. A petition started by Umberto Eco and Dario Foy amongst others has now collected over 1000 signatures. read full story / add a comment

There is a tendency to dismiss the rantings of Kevin Myers as mere guff designed to sell newspapers. However, this would be to ignore the collateral damage his phosphorous cluster bomb prose inflicts. His salvo last Friday attacking the legacy of Bob Doyle and his comrades who fought in Spain against fascism should be a call to make next Saturday's commemoration in their honour a defiant rebuttal of all Myers' and his ilk stand for. read full story / add a comment

Our government has become more and more open about their plans for us. Cowan wants to drive down our living standards 12% and has already cut all our wages through the tax levy and slashed the wages of workers in the public sector further through the so called ‘pensions levy’. He openly talks of “four more years of even steeper cuts”. He is so confident of us taking this lying down that he had the cheek to announce his intention to drive down our living standards at what even RTE referred to as the “Dublin Chamber of Commerce's lavish AGM dinner which cost €160” a head. read full story / add a comment

It seems that the Galway by-pass may not now go ahead as planned after a dramatic eleventh-hour realisation by the Minister of the Environment that he is a member of the Green Party. "I had no idea I had these sort of powers, to stop developments that threaten the country's environmental heritage and prevent loss of habitat, until one of my civil servants (who I was making tea for at the time) pointed out that the Galway by-Pass is not sponsored by Shell, and although the Corrib bridge has a confusing name, it actually has nothing to do with the Corrib natural gas (eight billion euro giveaway) scheme in Mayo!" the Minister is not reported to have said. read full story / add a comment
