Last Saturday, members of the Galway Palestine Children's Appeal were "overwhelmed" by the public response to their appeal for humanitarian aid for the children and people of Gaza - expecting one 40ft container to be filled with medical supplies, household goods, non perishable food, clothes and toys, a further two had to be ordered and to ease the pressure, a request was broadcast by the local radio station, Galway Bay FM, for donors to procrastinate their visit to the drop-off point at the Black Box theatre until the delivery of the third container - this morning, at 7AM two of the stuffed containers started their journey of mercy and there is a large stockpile of aid awaiting the arrival of the third. Including an operating table from Letterkenny Hospital, medical staff in the west donated money and supplies and businesses such as the Galway Radisson Hotel gifted 100 duvets and pillows. read full story / add a comment

With increasing numbers choosing not to buy new cars here, or going north in search of second-hand bargains, there has been much discussion in the Irish motoring industry as to how a moribund market might be revived. The obvioius option: scrapping excise duty on cars (or Vehicle Registration Tax) is the elephant in the room that has been studiously ignored. read full story / add a comment

The AOHS is pleased to hear of the financial difficulties of the Irish Coursing Club due to a court ruling that it must pay damages to a land developer Greenband Investments, on the eve of the 2009 ICC final in Clonmel. Despite strong public opinion which favours an end to this outdated and barbaric pursuit, Coursing is still hanging in there, the pastime of the minority cloth-cap brigade. Hare Coursing is carried out for pleasure and gambling purposes only. read full story / add a comment

There is no entity in the world more keenly aware of the criminal nature of the Israeli project in Palestine than the government of Israel itself. David Ben Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel is often quoted on this point. But while Palestinians remain in a state of exile and oppression in their own country, he cannot be quoted enough: "Why should the Arabs make peace? If I was an Arab leader I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: we have taken their country. Sure God promised it to us, but what does that matter to them? Our God is not theirs. We come from Israel, but two thousand years ago, and what is that to them? There has been antisemitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They only see one thing: we have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that? " http://simple.wikiquote.org/wiki/David_Ben-Gurion read full story / add a comment

A short article in the Irish edition of the Daily Mirror points out the absurdity of the country making cutbacks in public services while sitting on billions of euro worth of natural resources, and happily handing them over to the most profitable companies in the world. A quick quote at the end makes clear that Fine Gael see nothing wrong with the present system, seeing the giveaway of 100 per cent of what is found as an "incentive". Presumably if Simon Coveney had gold buried in his garden, he would give it all away to anyone who was prepared to help him dig for it, keeping none for himself... waterford / worker & community struggles and protests / feature Friday January 30, 2009 23:48 by Joe Carolan
Following the successful factory occupation of Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago, the workers of Waterford Glass now show the way to fight redundancies and lay offs. In a year where it is estimated that up to 50 million workers are due to lose their jobs, and banks continue to be propped up with billions of dollars and euro, we need to demand that companies are nationalised and jobs defended. The Direct Action by the Waterford Workers now puts it up to the Irish government- who is more important, workers and their families or the tiny financial elite of the banks. Nationalise the Glass, and let the workers run the factory. They'd do a better job of it.
