Just before Christmas The Bogside Artists published a small book for children called Travels with Li Po. The book written by one of the trio, William Kelly has caused much controversy because its resemblance to Harry Potter is, for many who have read it, conspicuously obvious. A lawyer who was shown the list of parallels between the Harry Potter series and this book was "flabbergasted". read full story / add a comment

The election of Barrack Obama created a buzz all over the world. Some commentators even lost the run of themselves and tried to convince us that the one of the most important events in human history had just happened. People everywhere celebrated Obama’s victory in a way that they would not have done were it a new government in their own countries. This is barely surprising, if we take into account that decisions taken by the rulers in Washington DC carry a heavy load of consequences for millions of people across the five continents. read full story / add a comment

national / rights, freedoms and repression / opinion/analysis Tuesday January 20, 2009 11:56 by Shane OCURRY
It reads more like the adoring parish gazette piece about the bell ringer retiring after 30 years of good Christian service, than objective reporting about the significant, and highly unusual development of a Chief Constable being called to give evidence before an Inquiry into the murder of a solicitor in circumstances that are suggestive of a security force cover-up, if not actual collusion in the murder. It is hard to imagine how anyone could have heaped more praise onto the north of Ireland's former security top-dog. read full story / add a comment

For a number of years (4 at least) Circus Vegas and other Irish Circuses with animals,( American Circus, Sydney, New York etc,) have been the target of the ALF (Animal Liberation Front) who repeatedly removed or destroyed their signs on a regular basis. This was due to their use and abuse of both Wild and domestic animals in their shows. The Vegas Circus told us as we demonstrated at their circus that they had signs damaged to the tune of over 2000 euro a few years ago. This circus is owned by some of the Courtneys Brothers from Wexford. read full story / add a comment

Every area of business is getting in on the act: targetting students, that captive audience of impressionables. In this latest attempt, AIB asks students to build a bank in their school, and of course AIB will give the students all the help they need. (Campaign for Comercial-Free Education (CCFE) does not think the banks are in the best position to be giving financial advice at the moment.) read full story / add a comment

To encourage people of good conscience to boycott Israeli goods and produce, yesterday, activists and supporters of the Free Palestine Campaign picketed nine of unethical companies profiteering from their sale of Israeli foodstuffs, goods and support of Zionism, distributed information leaflets, garnering warm public support and severly embarrassing the Filthy Nine in the process. read full story / add a comment
national / anti-war / imperialism / news report Saturday January 17, 2009 18:48 by Miriam
An atlantic storm came rolling in from the south west today with high winds and lashing rain - not the best weather for an outdoor protest. Undaunted several hundred people turned up at Daunt Square (!) for the third week running. Umbrellas were turned inside out and banners blown about - at one point the large Palestinian Flag at the front of the protest march down Patrick Street was ripped from one of its poles by a gust of wind. Everybody was saturated but the crowd was determined despite the weather: during the week one of the Palestinian organisers had lost his brother and his brother's entire family - 6 children and wife - all gone. The grief on his face was enough motivation for 10K protestors. A Jewsih couple from the Yemen gave an talk about the political situation in Israel. read full story / add a comment
