It was probably the most important anti-war action to happen in Ireland this century – and it was certainly the most daring.

At Shannon Airport five people took on the might of the US military – and put a Navy war-plane out of action.. Even more amazingly, they ultimately convinced a jury that to do so was not a crime.

But the story of the Shannon Five has hardly been told, until now. For the first time, a new book reveals the inside story of an intrepid act read full story / add a comment

This article was picked up by Archaeology Magazine, run by the Archaeological Institute of America:

"Here’s a summary of what preservationists have tried to do to save Ireland’s Hill of Tara from highway construction. Their new argument suggests that the downturn in the country’s economy requires Ireland to save its historic resources as tourist destinations."

HOPI London will host a meeting on October 8th: 7pm @ Kings' College Campus, The Strand, London which will be addressed by two leading members of the Iranian student organisation 'Iranian Students for Freedom and Equality' http://www.azady-barabary.org

This organisation was central to last December's inspirational anti-war, anti-regime demonstrations in Iran, which led to the arrest of over 70 activists. At these demonstrations, slogans such as "No to war! Death to the dictator", "The university is not an army garrison" and even "Hands Off The People of Iran!" which was inspired by the active solidarity of HOPI supporters in Europe. read full story / add a comment

"Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. It is wrong and in-human to impose the Jews on the Arabs" (Mahatma Gandhi)

"I believe that Gandhi's views were the most enlightened of all the political men of our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence for fighting for our cause, but by non-participation of anything you believe is evil" (Albert Einstein)

In weather, more the revenge of Gaia than ultra bad, after their testimony at the Galway Inter-Faith Alliance organised; A Commemoration of the Life and Work of Mahatma Gandhi, three Palestinians joined Free Palestine Campaign activists at their Shop Street info stall last Saturday, Dr. George Rishmawi, Director of Siraj, Center for Holy Land Studies, Dr. Mohamed Altawil, Dr. of Psychology, University of Hertfordshire, UK and Tareq Natsheh of the Palestine Progressive Youth Union. read full story / add a comment

Sometimes coincidences happen in a timely way, while at other times they appear to happen but are actually coordinated events.

On Monday, the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan announced that Facebook, the popular social networking site, was setting up its head office for Europe in Dublin. Since Facebook doesn't actually make anything, it will have a negligible effect on the economy, but it sends the right sort of signal. At the same time (around midday on Monday) the profile page for the Shell to Sea campaign was removed from Facebook.

Some Shell to Sea groups remain, but as anyone who uses Facebook will tell you, having a profile page is where the action is. Shell to Sea had a popular one, with lots of "friends" and activity on the page. It was very useful in spreading information about the campaign, especially outside Ireland.

So Mary Coughlan goes on the radio to talk about Facebook and how its arrival in Ireland sends a strong signal. At the same moment, the Shell to Sea page is removed. Coincidence? read full story / add a comment
