Political Quiz: You were the Fianna Fáil Minister for Finance during the last few years. There is a massive economic crash landing happening because of your policies, which focused economic activity on selling houses to each other rather than building up things like education, culture, home grown industry etc. What do you do now? 1.Make the poor pay- strip funding from pensioners, students, schoolkids and the under-priviliged. 2.Blame the international situation. 3.Blame the people who voted against Lisbon. 4. Put your hands up, admit your mistakes, and invest in basic services which will make the recession a bit more bearable for everyone. (hint- this is Fianna Fáil remember...) Anyway, at least he's not Enda Kenny. read full story / add a comment

It was probably the most important anti-war action to happen in Ireland this century – and it was certainly the most daring. At Shannon Airport five people took on the might of the US military – and put a Navy war-plane out of action. Even more amazingly, they ultimately convinced a jury that to do so was not a crime. But the story of the Shannon Five has hardly been told, until now. For the first time, a new book reveals the inside story of an intrepid act of peacemaking. read full story / add a comment

Inspired by the recent climate camps in Britain, there have been some meetings to discuss the possibility of having a similar camp in Ireland in 2009. There have been two of these meetings so far (one in Dublin and one in Cork). The camp's purpose will be to address diverse social justice, environmental, climate issues and to be a catalyst for movement building in this country. The guiding principles of 'Direct Action' and non-hierarchical consensus based decision making will apply. We are appealing for people to get involved, and help make it happen. We are currently still at the discussion stages, so now is a good time to get involved and be part of the decision making process of what the main focus of the camp will be. We intend to make this camp as inclusive as possible. read full story / add a comment

He criticized the conduction of economic policy by Brazilian Central Bank. "The CB is throwing money in the market without taking a specific concern with the change in the economic model, with public investment." Our concern is to analyze the crisis from the perspective of individuals, of the nation, and not from the perspective of the market, because the market heralds want to read full story / add a comment

"He blocks access to our education, we block his access to the opening. - Pa O' Brien ULSU President, advocate of a graduate tax and Fianna Fail member. Minister Martin Cullen attended the opening of the newly built Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) building on University of Limerick campus last Monday evening. Ahead of the scheduled event, ULSU issued a press release headlined "UL Students to block Minister from ICO opening". What actually transpired was an entirely different set of events. At about 1pm, ULSU officers led an impressive turnout of about 400 students towards the Thomond Bridge on campus to block vehicular access to the ICO. The only other access to the building was via the Living way pedestrian bridge, which ULSU president Pa O'Brien ensured us was being monitored by a fellow SU officer. The fact that the location chosen for the blockade was not the building Cullen intended on attending was originally put down to he assumed tactical naivety of the union officers, but the motives for the location chosen later became apparent. read full story / add a comment

Bush in Washington D.C to supposedly resolve the ongoing global financial crisis. Richard Behal was a candidate for Sinn Fein in 1984 European Election in Munster. This was an international election. He was prevented from appearing on RTE, due to a Ministerial Order under Section 31 of the Broadcasting Act. His policies were misrepresented by RTE on a special Munster constituency programme, which gave the other eight candidates extended airtime. At the end the programme purported to give the audience a very brief summary of Behal’s platform, but misrepresented it. He was never contacted by RTE. read full story / add a comment |
