In a speech in July, Barack Obama stated that he wants to "re-deploy" American troops in Iraq "carefully" with their safety in mind and "responsibly" leaving behind a "sovereign" Iraqi government that can "take responsibility for its own future." In doublespeak that means Barack Obama is as committed as George W. Bush was to the imperialist American project in the Middle East - toppling anti-American elites and replacing them with pro-American elites to administer the American agenda. Obama is a wolf in sheeps clothing. read full story / add a comment

Thousands of people turned out to the Sinn Fein rally/march today (Sun 2 Nov) which opposed the 'home coming' parade by the notorious RIR regiment of the British Army. There was a large Ógra Shinn Féin presence on the day, with young republicans travelling from across Ireland. The rally/march was calling for an end to the ongoing illegal occupations in Ireland, Iraq, and Afghanistan and also to demand the truth for the hundreds of families who have been bereaved through the official British state policy of collusion and state murder. The UDR/RIR themselves where part and parcel of the murder machine. read full story / add a comment

Nov. 5th sees the world's first attempted co-ordinated action against commercialisation in education (including against fees for education). So far, activists in 22 countries have signed up to have mass co-ordinated events. This essay seeks to look at some of the issues involved in commercialism in education. Since we have not reached the level of commercialism in our schools that pervade an education system such as the American one, perhaps now is the time to begin the fight against the commercialism that is present, before it becomes too much to be countered. read full story / add a comment

"Unabashed leftist", Studs Terkel who was blacklisted during the McCarthy has died. Born in 1912 to Russian Jewish parents, he got the nickname Studs as a young man from the character Studs Lonigan, the protagonist of James T Farrell's trilogy of novels about an Irish-American youth from Chicago's south side ... Born in New York, Terkel became synonymous with Chicago, the city where he moved at age 10 and rarely left. His parents ran a boarding house and a men's hotel during the Great Depression, giving the young Terkel a steady diet of the struggles of ordinary people whose stories became his life's work" http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2008/1101/...3.htm read full story / add a comment

Criminally complicit in facilitating the transit of CIA torture flights via pit stop Ireland, it's reported that the Government is shaping up to do a cap-in-hand spineless slither to "the incoming US administration on the issue of extraordinary renditions and on the US military's use of Shannon Airport ... (and a) Cabinet committee will examine and strengthen legal provisions to ensure that gardaí and airport authorities have adequate legal powers for search and inspection of aircraft. This may involve strengthening the provisions of the Air Navigation and Transport Acts." (Irish Times). read full story / add a comment
