Sometimes coincidences happen in a timely way, while at other times they appear to happen but are actually coordinated events. On Monday, the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan announced that Facebook, the popular social networking site, was setting up its head office for Europe in Dublin. Since Facebook doesn't actually make anything, it will have a negligible effect on the economy, but it sends the right sort of signal. At the same time (around midday on Monday) the profile page for the Shell to Sea campaign was removed from Facebook. Some Shell to Sea groups remain, but as anyone who uses Facebook will tell you, having a profile page is where the action is. Shell to Sea had a popular one, with lots of "friends" and activity on the page. It was very useful in spreading information about the campaign, especially outside Ireland. So Mary Coughlan goes on the radio to talk about Facebook and how its arrival in Ireland sends a strong signal. At the same moment, the Shell to Sea page is removed. Coincidence? read full story / add a comment

This date may appear soon. The ground where Rozbrat is situated may be sold. The campaign "Rozbrat stays!" was not very loud in the last months but it does not mean that the situation of Rozbrat has stabilized. We ask you to keep your eyes open and support us when necessary. Islamophobia has replaced anti-semitism as the unifying ideology for the extreme right in Austria where neo-fascist rivals Heinz-Christian Strache and Jorg Haider utilised slogans such as “Homeland instead of Islam” and “Vienna must not become Istanbul” to make huge gains in last week’s national elections at the expense of the Conservative OeVP and Social Democrats SPOe parties . As the elections were taking place more than 90 Muslim graves were severely damaged at the cemetery in Traun, near Linz in what police believe was an organised action. read full story / add a comment

international / arts and media / feature Wednesday October 01, 2008 09:19 by Revolt Video Collective
This video represents the many people not given a voice in the mainstream media.
They have been denied a voice mainly because of their dissenting views about the
Corrib gas project in its current form. There are interviews with many people who
have suffered both personally and financially for daring to oppose the oil and gas
industry. This industry has been supported by the various intimidatory and violent
methods used by the Garda. The mainstream media has consistently misrepresented the
facts, and has failed to report human rights abuses taking place in Mayo. It has
instead tried to demonise anybody who goes against their neo-liberal view-point on
how Ireland should be organized and structured. Most of the interviews were filmed over the last month. Thanks to all of the people who generously gave up their time and energy to make this no budget documentary. This is the first part of an ongoing documentary about the Corrib Gas Project. read full story / add a comment

Just in case you thought all the talk about the Great Gas Rip Off ® was lefty treehugger claptrap ®, it was confirmed today by no less a personage than the government's own energy watchdog, who turns out to be highly-paid civil servant called Dermot Nolan. He works for a shower called the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) , and he told the Oireachtas Energy Committee today that as far as the Irish consumer is concerned, the gas from the Corrib field may as well be coming from Outer Mongolia (he didn't use those exact words). read full story / add a comment |
