Since its inception early this year the Belfast branch of WSM continues to go from strength to strength, growing in size and establishing new contacts. At the moment we distribute a 1000 copies of the Ulster edition of Workers Solidarity to homes across Belfast and at political events. We hope to expand our current distribution in the coming months. WSM members continue to take part in the current campaign against the water charges. We have attended and helped to organise pickets in solidarity with fellow workers on struggle in the midst of the current neo-liberal offensive and attacks on our living conditions and workers rights by the neo-colonial administration at Stormont.

Despite all odds, with scrambled radio and jammed phones courtesy of dirty tricks, a seasick passenger, in rough waves with a storm brewing, the small boats, the SS Free Gaza and the SS Liberty, successfully landed in Gaza early yesterday evening, breaking the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. They left Cyprus on Thursday morning, sailing over 350 kilometers through choppy seas. They made the journey despite threats that the Israeli government would use force to stop them. They continued sailing although they lost almost all communications and navigation systems due to outside jamming by some unknown party. They arrived in Gaza to the cheers and joyful tears of hundreds of Palestinians who came out to the beaches to welcome them. read full story / add a comment

According to a report delivered to the U.N. General Assembly on January 10, 2008 by the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), there were no reported instances of persons disappeared in Haiti during the year 2007. The WGEID is part of the U.N. High Commission on Human Rights and as such is in the loop to receive regular human rights reports filed by the U.N. mission in Haiti. More than five months after Mr. Pierre-Antoine’s disappearance and public acknowledgement of the case by U.N. authorities in Haiti, the WGEID completely omitted any reference to it in their report to the General Assembly. read full story / add a comment

This morning at 10am, 15 Shell to Sea activists entered the water at Glengad Beach to stop Shell pipeline excavation work. Dinghies, surfers and swimmers surrounded the machine and stopped the work by their presence in the water.

3 members of the Garda water unit then began picking people out of the boats and the water and bringing the protestors into the Shell compound where other Gardaí conveyed them then to Belmullet Garda station. Gardaí were questioned by activists, asked to identify themselves and give reasons why they were pulling people from the water. Gardaí were questioned as to what authority they had to give directions or use force against protesters in the water. They refused to account for themselves. “Public Order Act” shouted one very aggressive Garda.

A number of protesters have been arrested in Mayo resisting Shell contractors who have been trying to install pipeline infrastructure on Glengad beach.

Five people were reportedly arrested this morning and another three this afternoon.

It is unclear whether all those arrested have been charged under the Public Order Act or have simply been detained.

Shell has been working on the beach, which is a Special Area of Conservation, under a foreshore licence granted by Minister Mary Coughlan and permissions from Minister Eamon Ryan, even though they have yet to receive planning permission for the onshore section of their proposed pipeline. read full story / add a comment

In today's Evening Herald, columnist Dan White plumbs new depths of idiocy. In a bizarre link, he tries to make out that the conflict in Georgia and South Ossetia should encourage the Irish government to help Shell bring the gas from the Corrib field onshore.

What does he think they have been doing? Does the 11 million euro spent on Garda overtime not indicate (even to the slow witted Dan White) that maybe the government is already on Shell's side?

Barak Ravid is reporting in today's edition of Haaretz newspaper that Israel would, according to PM Ehud Olmert, "unleash more massive firepower" and to "hit back harder than before," if Lebanon were to become a "terrorist state" under the domination of Hezbollah. Israel "did not use all means to respond then, but if Lebanon becomes a Hezbollah state, then we won't have any restrictions in this regard ... gone are the days when wars are fought on remote and hidden battlefields while life in the cities carries on as usual," he said. read full story / add a comment

You have to hand it to those tireless activists over at British National Party HQ in the land of the brave and the home of the free (England, for the unitiated in imperialist propaganda).

The intrepid campaigners for racial purity have been so busy churning out their ‘information’ on “immigration invasion” that they simply haven’t had the time to verify the appropriateness of some of the images they’ve been using on their website.

In an August 4 article entitled Spot the Difference: Zimbabwe or the EU?, far-right readers are confronted with a prominent image of a No to Lisbon leaflet (carried here for those who don't wish to boost the ratings of Britain's super xenophobes) recently published by none other than an Irish socialist-republican party, éirígí. read full story / add a comment

According to Sunday's Daily Mail, Shell misled the experts who were tasked with assessing the company's planning application for the proposed onshore pipeline route.

Julie Fossitt, Senior Ecologist with the National Parks and Wildlife Services and author of the standard reference work "A Guide to Habitats in Ireland" asserted in a memo released under Freedom of Information legislation, that '‘key information was withheld from specialists whose opinions were included in the planning documents" and that ‘the project ecologists did not have access to key sections of the proposed pipeline route’.
