I was on my way to the printers (to get photos printed for anti war exhibition) yesterday (Fri. Aug.8th) and came across this protest/vigil that was organised by the 'Burma Action Ireland' group.
I was surprised to see this, as I had heard or read nothing about it, I was even more surprised, given the important significance of the date, 8-8-88, that it wasn't advertised in the events section on indymedia.

I have my own ideas why this was, but would any of you care to comment?

While I am here, I will post some of the text from the press release. read full story / add a comment

Amidst the fog of war, and lack of media on the ground, it's anybody's guess as to what is actually going on there at the minute. It is claimed that Russian aircraft attacked military and other targets in Georgia (Russia denies any such attacks happened, and Georgia claims to have shot down some of the aircraft) and a large number of Russian tanks has crossed the border. Each side claims the other fired the first shot. read full story / add a comment

Animal Rights groups were tipped off that the Hunting Association of Ireland was going to be hosting a breakfast seminar this morning to unite groups and companies which have been the subject of protest for their treatment of animals.

The main speaker at the event was Lt. Col. Dennis Foster (US Army, ret'd) who was described as an ''expert on animal rights terrorists" .

mayo / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Thursday August 07, 2008 18:01 by nuachtan   text 17 comments (last - friday october 15, 2010 21:42)   image 3 images
It's been reported that the gardaí have spent 11,000,000 euro on policing the protests against the Shell scheme to install a production pipeline and refinery in Kilcommon County Mayo.

The amount is more than half of what is being spent on fighting organised crime (€20M) and the Irish Independent newspaper reports that Garda sources are concerned that policing the protests is draining overtime budgets.

In May this year the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission recommended that there should be a general review of the way public protests are policed, in the light of more than 70 complaints received about the Corrib protests. GSOC wrote to Minister for Justice proposing that it carry out an examination of management of crowd protests and civil disobedience. However, the minister turned down the proposal, as he “did not feel that it was appropriate at that time”.

'Musicians Against War'....Blues and Rock and Roll.......
The Hub, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Saturday, 6th September, 8pm....line up to follow.

This is to help fund the anti war photography exhibition,
'Images of Resistance -inside and outside of Iraq.
We received no help at all from the Irish Arts Council, so we had to pare back the costs just to whatever we need to pay for printing and framing the images, with some small additional costs for flyers and posters etc.
Any photographers travelling are doing so at their own expense.

The costs to stage the work in New York will be at least €2,500.
To date we have €417 in the bank account.

Below is the first paragraph of a Herald Tribune article from Saturday 26th of July...it makes interesting reading.

BAGHDAD: The case of a freelance photographer in Iraq who was barred from covering the U.S. Marine Corps after he posted photos on the Internet of several dead marines has underscored what some journalists say is a growing effort by the U.S. military to control graphic images from the war......

Stephen Lendman in a Znet article http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/18348 succinctly puts the moral imperatives behind the Free Gaza Movement's brave sailings to the Israeli besieged Gaza Strip: "After Hamas' January 25, 2006 electoral victory, Israel targeted Gaza oppressively. All outside aid was cut off. Sanctions and an economic embargo were imposed, and the democratically elected government was falsely called a terrorist organization and isolated. Stepped up repression followed along with repeated IDF incursions, attacks, killings, targeted assassinations, arrests, destruction of property and more in a pattern all too familiar to Palestinians for over six decades. Gazans are imprisoned in their own land and have been traumatized for months. In June 2007, things got worse after Israel placed the Territory under siege - described by some as medieval because of its extreme harshness". read full story / add a comment

August 9 1971 was a pivotal date in Irish history. The introduction of internment exposed, yet again, the ugly face of British imperialism in Ireland and acted as a catalyst for increased resistance to the occupation.

The introduction of 42-day detention is a similar travesty of justice, foisted upon an unwilling population by a British government that is determined to repress dissent. read full story / add a comment

Lorna Siggins in the Irish Times reports that Bord Pleanála has asked for extensive further information from Shell about their plan to install a production pipeline linking the offshore Corrib gas field with the refinery they are trying to build nine kilometres inland.

Many people fear that the planning procedure will be a simple "rubber stamp" exercise, since the original planning decision that the project was unsuitable for the area was overturned by the planning board on appeal. Since then, Shell has been supported at every step by all arms of the government, despite the fact that the project clearly lacks local consent. read full story / add a comment
