Exciting Times Ahead for Galway as the Long Awaited 'Social Space' Opens its Doors this Saturday.

After many months of gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair, Galway Social Space has found a location in the city centre to call a home. The space will be opening its doors to visitors this Saturday 16th August 2008 from 2pm.

The Galway Social Space Project has been underway since October of last year, when the process of building a non-hierarchical, autonomous, community based cultural and arts space in the city of Galway began. Months of planning, brainstorming, searching and fundraising have at last came to fruition and the group is delighted to announce the opening of the space this Saturday.

Maybe it is not the sort of anti government story Sir Anthony would want. Minister Martin Cullen padding around in his first class pajamas on his first class flight to China has vanished, replaced by:

"Cabinet opposed to across-the-board pay rises
By RONALD QUINLAN

ACROSS-the-board pay rises look like an increasingly unlikely outcome from the national pay talks as the Government attempts to rein in inflation and protect employment as the economic downturn continues."

Remember The Animals Need Your Voice!
dublin / animal rights / press release Saturday August 09, 2008 16:28 by Stephan Wymore   image 1 image   video 2 video files
As many of you will know, the Irish government is drafting new legislation for the upcoming Irish animal welfare bill and this will be a critical and crucial time for animals in Ireland. We have the opportunity to stop many heartbreaking acts of cruelty to animals, from homeless abandoned and abused dogs and cats seeking shelter on the cold wet streets to animals that are chained and confined in the circus, to greyhounds suffering and dieing in the Irish racing industry, barbaric bloodsports, cruel fur farming, painful and unscientific animal experiments and much more the list is endless and much goes unnoticed, but we must not allow this to happen, we intend to rip the lid off cruelty to animals in Ireland make it widely known that animals are not ours to use or exploit in anyway, shape or form. read full story / add a comment

I was on my way to the printers (to get photos printed for anti war exhibition) yesterday (Fri. Aug.8th) and came across this protest/vigil that was organised by the 'Burma Action Ireland' group.
I was surprised to see this, as I had heard or read nothing about it, I was even more surprised, given the important significance of the date, 8-8-88, that it wasn't advertised in the events section on indymedia.

I have my own ideas why this was, but would any of you care to comment?

While I am here, I will post some of the text from the press release. read full story / add a comment

Amidst the fog of war, and lack of media on the ground, it's anybody's guess as to what is actually going on there at the minute. It is claimed that Russian aircraft attacked military and other targets in Georgia (Russia denies any such attacks happened, and Georgia claims to have shot down some of the aircraft) and a large number of Russian tanks has crossed the border. Each side claims the other fired the first shot. read full story / add a comment

never one around when you want one... Gardaí at the Bellanaboy Shell site
mayo / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Thursday August 07, 2008 18:01 by nuachtan   text 17 comments (last - friday october 15, 2010 21:42)   image 3 images
It's been reported that the gardaí have spent 11,000,000 euro on policing the protests against the Shell scheme to install a production pipeline and refinery in Kilcommon County Mayo.

The amount is more than half of what is being spent on fighting organised crime (€20M) and the Irish Independent newspaper reports that Garda sources are concerned that policing the protests is draining overtime budgets.

In May this year the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission recommended that there should be a general review of the way public protests are policed, in the light of more than 70 complaints received about the Corrib protests. GSOC wrote to Minister for Justice proposing that it carry out an examination of management of crowd protests and civil disobedience. However, the minister turned down the proposal, as he “did not feel that it was appropriate at that time”.

'Musicians Against War'....Blues and Rock and Roll.......
The Hub, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Saturday, 6th September, 8pm....line up to follow.

This is to help fund the anti war photography exhibition,
'Images of Resistance -inside and outside of Iraq.
We received no help at all from the Irish Arts Council, so we had to pare back the costs just to whatever we need to pay for printing and framing the images, with some small additional costs for flyers and posters etc.
Any photographers travelling are doing so at their own expense.

The costs to stage the work in New York will be at least €2,500.
To date we have €417 in the bank account.

BAGHDAD: The case of a freelance photographer in Iraq who was barred from covering the U.S. Marine Corps after he posted photos on the Internet of several dead marines has underscored what some journalists say is a growing effort by the U.S. military to control graphic images from the war......
