Tháinig ar a laghad 50 duine chuig léirsiú Shell chun Sáile i mBaile Andarsain i mBéal Feirste tráthnóna inniu, ag tacú le Maura Harrington agus ag éileamh go gcuirtear an Solitaire thar sáile. Níorbh fhada gur chuir bainisteoir an staisiúin Shell scairt ar na póilíní, ach lean na gníomhaígh leis an agóid, ag scaipeadh billeogaí faoi Maura ags an cás i Maigh Eo faoi láthair. Mar is gnáth, fuair na gníomhaígh tacaíocht mhór ón phobal, tiománaithe ag buladh a mbonnán agus coisithe ag tabhairt a mbeannacht leis an fheachtas. Leanfar leis na léirsithe agus an feachtas ag dul chun cinn. read full story / add a comment

In his latest column for the New Statesman, John Pilger examines news as parody as those prominent in the British media seek to justify the official versions of the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan: Here comes the new Cold War, with promises of more bombs, more of the militarised society with its 730 bases worldwide, on which Americans spend 42 cents of every tax dollar... the devastation of Iraq’s health, once the best in the Middle East, by the ubiquitous dust from British and US depleted uranium weapons. A World Health Organisation study reporting a cancer epidemic has been suppressed ... read full story / add a comment

Several prominent politicians today called for Shell to immediately make explicit what the intent of the pipe laying ship Solitiare is. Given that Maura Harrington is entering her 10th day of hunger strike, and there are various rumours going around about the sea worthiness of the pipelaying vessel, Tony Gregory TD, Sen. David Norris, Joe Higgins, Patricia McKenna, Andy Storey (Afri) and the filmmaker Ken Loach all signed up to the joint statement calling for the Multinational Shell to give an unequivocal annoucement , rather than playing with the life of local campaigner Ms Harrington read full story / add a comment

A large crowd assembled at 6pm today to show solidarity for Maura Harrington and the Shell to Sea cause and outrage at the continuing situation in North West Mayo. A Shell to Sea activist was accosted and arrested for refusing to give his name by two special brnachers after the vigil as he was walking down the street. Intimidation of this kind is unfortunately to be expected as the state uses last nights bomb threat to increase the pressure on the S2S activists and supporters. The vigil continues today at 6pm and there will be a 24 hour fast and film screening beginning 6pm Friday should Mauras action be ongoing at that stage. read full story / add a comment

As Maura Harrington's hunger strike entered its second week today, a delegation of Shell to Sea kayakers travelled yet again to Killybegs, Co. Donegal, to establish contact with Shell's pipe-laying ship the Solitaire. The purpose of the mission was to make contact with the Solitaire's bridge, and to ascertain its intentions regarding its departure from Irish waters. However, the Shell to Sea delegation did not expect the Solitaire to run away from them, which is what it did, thereby refusing all contact with Shell to Sea. Maura Harrington's hunger strike will end when the Solitaire leaves Irish territorial waters, or else she will die. read full story / add a comment

Maura Harrington's hunger strike against the continuing presence of the pipe-laying ship the Solitaire in Irish waters continued into its seventh day today. In honour of her retirement today on, a special celebration was held in the primary school in Inver, where she had worked as a schoolteacher for over 30 years and as a principal for nearly 10. The protective vigil around her continues tonight, as she continues her hunger strike outside the gates of Shell's Glengad compound. As news of solidarity actions around Ireland and Europe reaches Erris, the community have taken heart from this support and are ever-more resolved to defend their beleaguered community. Also included in this posting are a selection of photos illustrating what may be about to be lost should Shell and the state get their corrupt violent way. I composed it in response to a statement made by Maura in her letter to the captain of the Solitaire. read full story / add a comment |
