Following the theft and damage of Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace signs in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, Galway on Friday night had a visitation of similiar malovolence when two large signs were torn from their anchorages, sliced into pieces and, bizarrely, after the top sections containing the text; "Israel Killed 52 Palestinian Children" were razored off, whatever, and stolen, the remaining pieces were neatly arranged on the grass - the signs highlighted the fact that Israel killed 52 Palestinian children in the first 18 weeks of 2008 and yet the EU, true to its hypocritical colours, refuses to impose sanctions. read full story / add a comment

The Raytheon 9 are an inspiration. I just got a phone call from my friend Les who's trying to get a plane ticket to get to Belfast for the Raytheon 9 trial. Les hasn't been to Northern Ireland since he did three tours with the British military. He says is it is so exciting that socialists and republicans are experimenting with nonviolent direct action and he wants to be there to support them at the trial. He says that this would be a great way for him to return to Northern Ireland - confront his past and celebrate a future with a community in resistance to war. read full story / add a comment

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen is to attend a rally today to steady the resolve of Dublin FF supporters in a last ditch effort to get them to support the Lisbon Treaty. The event will take place at 2PM at the National College of Ireland in the IFSC. The last ditch rally is an echo of the same tactic which was carried out last year in thegeneral election the Sunday before polling day. Sources in the NO campaign said they would make their presence felt at the rally, to protest against the militarisation of the EU, amongst many other issues. read full story / add a comment

"History is a nightmare from which I am trying to wake." - Stephen Daedalus, in Ulysses, James Joyce 1922 Oaxaca City, Mexico, May 15 - Midnight in Oaxaca, and walking around the historic center, it's almost as if nothing had ever happened here. The bourgeoisie sit around under the colonial arches in the long stretch of French-style outdoor cafes lining the central plaza. Aside from being beset by a small army of ambulant trinket vendors and beggars, the well-heeled citizens sipping cappuccinos seem very at ease with the world. A few late night tourists wander about the pleasant old streets under the starry sky, and the industrious hum of the sultry cosmopolitan city invokes an eternal calm. read full story / add a comment

Dublin youth activists united in protest today outside the European Union house to urge a No! vote in this Thursday’s Lisbon Treaty referendum. The protest, which included an open mic and street theatre, was jointly organised by Ógra Shinn Féin, and the Connolly Youth Movement, with members of the IPSC and Anarchist activists also in attendance. Following a very imaginative and visible protest which had Brian Cowen and Charlie McCreevy present, there was an extensive canvass of the thronged Grafton Street asking people to secure a better deal for Ireland, and vote No! read full story / add a comment
