The Independent Workers’ Union urges all Trade Union member’s and Workers to campaign on behalf of a NO VOTE in the forthcoming E.U. Constitution referendum, now known as the ‘Lisbon Treaty’.
This Treaty poses a major threat to workers’ and personal freedoms. The I.W.U. and other European Trade Unions are very concerned at the potential annihilation of workers’ rights, pay and conditions by a number of concerning anti-Trade Union/anti-Workers measures contained within the Treaty. read full story / add a comment

Shell recently announced the names of local groups in Erris who they are going to fund, as part of the deal they arrived with government appointed mediator Peter Cassels in 2006.

Cassells, who admitted that there was no basis for mediation while Shell insisted on an onshore production pipeline and refinery, recommended that the company should pay money into the local community in an effort to turn public opinion in favour of the scheme.

Of the groups favoured with grants, only a handful were from the local parish of Kilcommon, which would bear the brunt of the environmental disaster that Shell's scheme would entail. Of these, local people laughed at some of the more obviously silly and fictional "groups", but people were genuinely puzzled by the inclusion of the Dooncarton Landslide Committee. This group, which is widely respected in the local area, has been working to rebuild the local cemetery which was badly damaged in 2003, when heavy rains swept part of the hillside down into the bay.

In this article, Peter Tatchell deals with the latest lies and homophobic outbursts from George Galloway. In this case Galloway is supporting the Iranian Regiome even when it comes to the execution of gays using any lies to cover for them.

George Galloway, the Respect MP, has made allegations that border on paedophile smears and play to homophobic prejudice. He claims the boyfriend of gay Iranian asylum seeker Mehdi Kazemi was executed (1) for "committing sex crimes against young men". The insinuation of such a claim is that Mehdi's boyfriend was a rapist or a child sex abuser and also stigmatises Mehdi as he was his partner. He will suffer this stigma when he is returned to the UK and could face personal hostility from people who believe these allegations . Galloway made his astonishing allegation on Channel Five's The Wright Stuff. He has been asked to explain the source of his claim, but has so far failed to do so. read full story / add a comment

The German magazine "Stern" published a report on the supermarket LIDL in the last week which alledged the corporation had been spying on its employees. The story is now being taken up across Europe, where indeed workers shop in & work for the LIDL chain. The allegations are being supported daily by more and more evidence as can be seen by perusing the original articles at "Stern" complete with photos, a vid, extracts from internal memos, et cetera, so long & so forth.

Included in the internal memos were suggestions that menstruating women employees wear a coloured headband so managers could allow them extra "toilet time", time which would be denied male or non-menstruating employees. It gets worse.., "tattoos"........."wants higher wages"........"junkie friends"......... read full story / add a comment

This is a brief article on our position as Latin American Solidarity Centre regarding the "free trade" agreements of the EU with Asia, Africa and Latin America, disguised as Economic Partnership Agreements and Association Agreements. On the series of events organised for Latin America Week (April 7th-12th) we will bring some speakers from Italy, Holland, Colombia and Ecuador who will speak on the impact of such agreements over basic services such as water. Fur Free campaigners in Donegal Town will demand an end to Irish fur farms this Saturday. With a Hugh visual display of caged animals, Large Banners, Posters, and Leaflets, activists will highlight the horrible suffering found on fur farms.

The fur industry is one of the cruelest industries in the world. Unfortunately, Minister Mary Coughlan has allowed County Donegal to become known as the fur farm capital of Ireland. Donegal has this reputation for three reasons;
1) County Donegal has more fur farms than any other county in Ireland;
2) The Irish Fur Breeders Association is in County Donegal;
3) The constituency of the Agriculture minister, Mary Coughlan is in Donegal. It is Minister Coughlan who gives the licences to the fur farmers each year. The Minister of Agriculture has the most say on whether or not fur farming will continue in Ireland

Last year, the EU Constitution was defeated in referendums in France and the Netherlands. Europe’s governments quickly got together and rewrote the constitution as an incredibly complicated list of amendments to existing treaties. Together these amendments make up the “Treaty of Lisbon.” Valery Giscard d’Estaing, the president of the Convention on the Future of Europe which did much of the ground work in drafting the constitution, has concluded that “the difference between the original Constitution and the present Lisbon Treaty is one of approach, rather than content”. read full story / add a comment

March 26th sees the first "world document freedom day" celebrated in many states including Ireland to promote & raise awareness for Document Freedom and Open Standards.

Irish support comes from the Dundalk Institute of Technology. DkIT is a proposed site of OOoCon2008 as well. So, if you're into the idea of an open standard which allows you produce, open and alter documents using open source software across platforms then you should go to Dundalk & get a t-shirt. Apparantly they've been sent loads. They may even have umbrellas too. If you're against this, you can always boycott Dundalk and campaign against it hosting the OocCon2008 event. Either way you ought learn a bit more about the campaign. read full story / add a comment

The I.T Newswire is full of Information on the attendance of Mary Hanafin TD at the INTO Conference.
headlines emerging discuss the secularisation of the Primary School System (only the religious would
put up with the degradation that seems obvious to most parents..) and the ongoing 'reform'of the sector.
I though that our 'Multi-culturalism' was strictly of White-eastern Europeans and bi-lingual Polish community,
given the fight that many Nigerian parents have had to put up to have their kids access health and education
services. Ms Hanafin did not dissapoint, her speech is accessible to download at:-
