The giveaway of Ireland's natural gas is a far greater corruption than anything the Mahon Tribunal is likely to uncover, according to Patricia McKenna of the Green Party. The former MEP was also critical of her Green Party colleague, Minister Eamon Ryan. She is speaking at a public meeting in Dublin this Thursday, March 13th at 7pm at the ATGWU Hall in Middle Abbey St, organised by the Dublin Shell to Sea campaign. Other speakers include journalist Frank Connolly and Micheál Ó Seighin, one of the Rossport Five. Event notice: http://www.indymedia.ie/article/86541 read full story / add a comment

The captains' drive-in took place in Greenore Golf Club on Sunday 9 March 2008 at 1.20 p.m. The day was bright and breezy. Everyone seemed in good humor. Coffee and biscuits were served outside at the clubhouse before the drive-in and Seán O'Hanlon was on hand at the first tee with champagne immediately before the drive-in happened. The captains for 2008 are Ann Davey and Michael Shields - both keen and energetic golfers. Ann is from NI while Michael is from the republic. read full story / add a comment

Last Wednesday 5 March, Sheena Campbell Ogra Shinn Fein hosted the opening event to remember the 20th anniversary of the Gibraltar 3, at Queens University Belfast.

It began with a black flag vigil outside the university front gates for 30 minutes as a mark of respect to those killed in Gibraltar and Milltown.

Following the vigil there was a talk and a showing of a film in Queens University.

The speakers at the event were Seamus Finucane, partner of Mairead Farrell when she was tragically killed, Jennifer McCann MLA, who was a close comrade of Mairead having been imprisoned with her in Armagh Gaol, she was also a close friend of Dan McCann, and West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff who was a student at Queens, at the time of the Gibraltar 3’s death.

Alternative uses for Tara tunnel system (if the NRA give up on destroying the Tara valley) :

Bertie Ahern could stash mooney in the tunnels for a while, until he gets his bank accounts sorted. Dermot Ahern could be looking up the trees.

Storage of E-voting machines

Carbon Capture

Place for the Labour Party to dump the weapons they inherited from the Workers Party

Westlife CD's could be buried in the tunnels

Paintballing dungeons and dragons style

Underground electricity cables

natural gas pipeline

Westlife could be buried there

(that's enough uses for Tara tunnels- Ed)

How is the author of the best selling book about the death of the crew of a fishing boat connected to the high prices for petrol being paid by Irish motorists?

It's said that Sebastian Junger, author of the bestseller The Perfect Storm, had his life saved by a Henry Okah, who is currently in jail somewhere in Nigeria, facing trial on a charge of treason. The deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, of which Okah's incarceration is a part, is contributing the rising world price of oil. read full story / add a comment

Here is an Amnesty International article on Parvin Ardalan and how she was prevented from leaving Iran.

Iranian feminist and journalist Parvin Ardalan was prevented from leaving Iran on Sunday to travel to Sweden where she was to receive the 2007 Olof Palme Prize in Stockholm. She said that after she boarded a plane at Tehran airport she was told that she was not permitted to leave the country. "They took my passport and said I could get it back after 72 hours," she said. "The only reason for this move is to prevent me from taking part in the ceremony."

There was a bomb attack on a United States military target, an army recruitment office, in New York City this morning.

At about 9AM Irish time (4AM in New York) an explosive device was detonated at the office in Manhattan.

The incident is reminiscent of IRA attacks on British army recruitment offices. In May 1990, for example, a British soldier was killed when a bomb exploded at an office in Wembley in London, and many other attacks were mounted against such places over the course of the conflict.
