Last year, in January 2007 a group of brave souls undertook to clim part of the Galtee Mountains to raise funds for a key court challenge with regard to the blocking of public access at the Old Head of Kinsale, Co. Cork. This year, as the case approaches a hearing in the High Court, funds are badly needed and we need more hardy folks to take to the mountains again. read full story / add a comment

This is a short opinion and analysis based in an article written in December 2006
regarding the Press laws introduced by the then Minister for Justice, Michael Mc Dowell.
He published a Bill entitled 'The Privacy and Defamation Bill 2006'.

http://www.indymedia.ie/article/78780

The Bill did not get legislated for in the form introduced and the 'Defamation 'section was 'shelved'.
Last night at the Launch of the Press Council of Ireland, current Justice Minister , Brian Leninhan TD
threatened the re-introduction of the defamation section , which had garnered international criticism. read full story / add a comment

I wish through your media outlet to bring attention to a grave injustice being perpetrated against an Irish Citizen by his own government, Noel Maguire is seeking repatriation back to Ireland from an English jail to serve the remainder of his sentence in the country of his birth and to be closer to his family. The refusal by the Irish government in accepting Noel’s application seems to be stripping him of his Irish Citizenship and the civil rights that are associated with it.

A video posted on youtube by members of the Irish Defence Forces- self-styled "Oglaigh na hEireann" - has been removed from by government order.

It is believed by some that Willie O'Dea was informed that the video, combined with the clear indication of his mustache, may lead some to believe that the whole 26 county defence forces idea was "a bit gay".

In the interest of free speech, the video should be seen, but people of a nervous disposition should be warned, it contains graphic scenes of disco dancing, men in showers, toilets and weight-lifting. read full story / add a comment

Really quite a miscellany of human interest stories this one.

Naples is notorious throughout Europe for its rubbish problem, which for many is blamed on the intransigence of the Comora or Napolitan mafia who sabotage every attempt to provide the city with incineration facilities. Over the Christmas the Italian military were sent into the city to clean up mountains of household waste which quite simply has nowhere to go. Today the Italian state has appointed a "garbage czar" to sort it out. Meanwhile the Peoples' Republic of China is to ban plastic bags in an attempt to stop pollution in its land. Very thought provoking. & there is a spat in Italy between a bishop and family members over plans to exhume & display the body of Padre Pio the patron saint of "January blues". read full story / add a comment

Plans are fast progressing to redevelop part of the old Asahi chemical plant in Killala County Mayo with a power plant using the same type of technology that is used in incinerators. Although the company behind the scheme say they intend to generate electricity using a mixture of peat, wood, and imported coal, many fear that the huge facility will be converted to an incinerator in the future.
