A weekend of workshops, talks and films will be held in Seomra Spraoi from 16th-18th November. The purpose of the weekend is to get people new to activism from various backgrounds and groups to meet up, get to know each other and learn from the experience of the current Gluaiseacht activists and others. We hope to create enthusiasm for the various campaigns and some formal and informal networks which would kick-start some serious activism through Gluaiseacht and the other groups invited to participate. read full story / add a comment
international / anti-war / imperialism / news report Thursday October 25, 2007 18:07 by Edward Horgan
Afghanistan was the first target in 2001 in revenge for the 9/11 attacks on the US. Ireland offered Shannon airport to the US for this attack. The attack on Iraq had no such revenge motivation, just a grab for oil, as recently confirmed by Alan Greenspan, former US Treasury secretary. Ireland has allowed 1 million US troops pass through Shannon since March 2003. Now, Iran is the next likely target, probably within the next few months. Shannon and Irish airspace will again be used in direct and indirect support for any such attack on Iranian nuclear facilties. The fallout once again will be human lives, but this time there will also be nuclear fallout. It is long past the time for action to prevent Ireland's participation in these crimes against humanity. read full story / add a comment

dublin / miscellaneous / news report Wednesday October 24, 2007 16:59 by Jim
Up to one hundred students yesterday protested outside the Dáil over inadequate grants and their late payment. It was a far cry from the demonstrations in 2001 and 2002 when over 20,000 students took to the streets across Ireland to demand an increase in the grant to cover the cost of living. Nonetheless given the inertia of the student movement over the last few years it was a welcome step forward. Most of the students came from Trinity and UCD with some members of Labour Youth and Ogra Sinn Fein present. read full story / add a comment

The Iraq Freedom Congress rejects the right of the US Senate to decide the destiny of the Iraqi nation. The IFC also make their own case against partition. The United States Senate have adopted a resolution in which partitioning of Iraq to regional federalism is proposed. This decision comes after more than four years of virtually dividing Iraq (legally, constitutionally and politically) to wards. Since the occupation of Iraq; the Governing Council and all successive governments were established based on sectarianism and ethnicity after enacting a constitution that paved the way for this division. What is taking place today, such as the conflict at the highest level of the political power in Iraq and the killing of thousands of innocent people by militia groups who are wrestling among each other throughout the recent years, is a clear expression of each group's intention to obtain a greater share of power, influence and wealth based on the aforementioned division. read full story / add a comment

To commemorate the Night of the Dead, when the windows between this world and the next are torn off their hinges and all kinds of malicious spirits wander the earth in search of mortal prey, and the victims they seek awaken in the chilly sweat of fear and cling desperately to their Rosary beads, their Korans, their stethoscopes or whatever other talismans they can lay their trembling hands on, and feverishly mutter whatever prayers and incantations to protect them ... read full story / add a comment |
