international / anti-war / imperialism / news report Thursday August 23, 2007 12:52 by MichaelY
In an interesting article, The Independent covered the latest disgrace by the British Government concerning the banning of and refusing entry to a Palestinian under 19s football team to the UK. The IPSC contacted UEFA re:this incident and we have received a non-committal reply saying that the Palestinians are not members of UEFA [while Israel is!!] and, anyway, this was a British Government decision and there is nothing they can do about it. All comments welcome. In the meantime we are awaiting breathlessly the Kevin Myers response to all of this. read full story / add a comment
international / worker & community struggles and protests / other press Thursday August 23, 2007 11:35 by Ardeshir Mehrdad and Yassamine Mather
In this article Ardeshir Mehrdad and Yassamine Mather examine the underpinnings of Political Islam, they show how it is fundamentally anti-democratic and how it is hostile to the Enlightenment and the interests of the Working Class. The full text is at the link. The last three decades have witnessed a relentless growth of Islamic movements, so that, today political Islam is an undeniable reality on the world scene. The events of September 11, 2001 and since have given it further prominence. From the Middle East to North Africa and South Asia, it has, in its various manifestations, become a major player that needs to be analysed both politically and theoretically. The contradictory nature of political Islam means that such analyses must deal with it not only in relation to the interests of capital, but also in relation to the challenge it poses to socialist ideas. read full story / add a comment

Canadian Union of Public Employees or CUPE, has uploaded pictures of the altercation that show the arrested “protesters” have the same footwear as the police. The video and photos show that the protesters are moving into the police line as a union leader challenges their actions and tries to expose them as police officers. read full story / add a comment

It's almost unheard of for any mainstream media organisation to give positive or honest coverage of direct action, action camps etc, so on the rare occasion that it does happen, it's worth seeing. Below is a scan of the front page of last The Independent (UK) of last Saturday (18 August, 2007). The cover story is a special report on the Climate Camp at Heathrow. read full story / add a comment

Heres an English translation of a story which got little attention in the mainstream media, what was published was sketchy and confusing. Kathlyn Stone provided the translations for the statements and wrote the main story. The full story is at the link. On the 4th of July, U.S. military and Iraqi national guards opened fire with bullets and grenades on the Baghdad home of Abdel-Hussein Saddam. The severely wounded Abdel-Hussein was taken away and his 18-year-old daughter was left alone, injured and bleeding on the floor. Abdel-Hussein’s beaten body turned up at the Yarmouk morgue on July 6. The murder of Abdel-Hussein was the most devastating of four attacks by the U.S. military on the Iraq Freedom Congress in the past 10 months. The IFC is comprised primarily of trade unionists, community leaders, women’s and children’s rights workers who are determined to look after their own. IFC’s goals are to salvage the lives of as many Iraqis as possible, and to end the occupation and sectarian fighting. read full story / add a comment

The membership of Dublin IRSP has reacted angrily to the latest persecution by the special branch on a member of the party and his family. Yesterday evening twelve members of the special branch raided his family home and physically assaulted one of his sons who answered the door. Four of his children ranging from 20 years of age to a child of 10 were home at the time watching television when they were confronted by twelve special branch officers wielding machine guns and handguns, they were thrown to the ground and handcuffed, whilst firearms were held to there heads. The children were informed by an individual later identified as Detective Sergeant O’Driscoll (Harcourt Street) that they had a warrant to search the house for firearms. read full story / add a comment

Yet again the Government has shown itself limited by the market push of the EU and the FDA with regard to choice in health care and diet. The FDA and EU had worked on an operating system, which cost millons where the net result is the coloured bar on the end of your ceral box which tells you the RDA of your food. Its the 'buy it bulk and sell it back at profit' school of thought which brought the ban on St John's Wort and the envisaged ban on Tea Tree Oil. In translation it just means that in exchange for the profit of the Multi's we get treated like kids with regard to Choice! The letters are to be directed to: Commissioner Markos Kyrianou DG Sanco, The European Commission B-1049 Brussels. Belgium. read full story / add a comment

Last week we all watched as the titular head of the Irish justice Department actively deported a six year old autistic boy, along with his twin sister and his mother. They were put on a commercial flight to Lagos, late at night and given enough cash for an hotel. In the last day a Mexican woman who had sought refuge for 12 months in a church and had become the voice of economic migrants and illegals in the US was picked up and deported to Tijuana, leaving behind her, her eight year old boy Saul. Elvira Arellano has vowed to continue her fight from the other side of the border. If we look at the newswire the overwhelming amount of these cases have involved women and children. No surprises there, they are slower and easier to catch. read full story / add a comment |
