Protest at the Department of Justice, 94 St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2 at 1PM on Friday July 13th in support of Pat O'Donnell, his son Johnathan O'Donnell, and Enda Carey, who were sentenced to prison yesterday by the judge in Belmullet District Court.

They are alleged to have assaulted a Garda in October last year. The charge, which they deny, could not be backed up by any video evidence, nor could the injured Garda say for sure how he was injured or describe the exact circumstances of the alleged assault. Nevertheless, the judge found the three men guilty of assault purely on the evidence of other Gardaí who on duty that morning.

Supporters will gather outside the Dept of Justice tomorrow at lunchtime to show solidarity with the men. read full story / add a comment

October 4th – 10th 2007 is world animal week. Here in Ireland, Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) will organize a nationwide week of action to support our joint ‘Stop Circus Suffering in Ireland’ campaign with our colleagues at Animal Defenders International (www.ad-international.org). Across the country there will be local campaigners gathering petitions, writing letters, contacting the media and staging peaceful protests outside of circuses that use animals. Never before has our campaign being so successful at highlighting the terrible conditions and the suffering animals endure in traveling circuses, people are refusing to support this cruelty, they are choosing different forms of ‘entertainment’, our message is simple – Ban Animal Act Circuses in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

A recent independent report oby a delegation of international human rights and environmental activists has slammed the actions of the Gardai in Mayo for suppressing peaceful protest and creating civil unrest.

The report, issued by the Global Community Monitor (GCM), was compiled from evidence gathered at a public hearing as well as through interviews, emails and video footage. It does not, however, take a position in relation to the construction of Shell’s pipeline. read full story / add a comment

The failed terrorist attacks in the UK have prompted another debate about the causes of such violence – and the ways to end it. Anyone who seeks to lay some of the blame at the door of western governments must expect a torrent of abuse from right-wing commentators and the “Cruise missile Left”, reinforced by a useful collection of house Muslims and renegade jihadists keen to put the spotlight on factors within the Muslim world that are beyond the influence of US / UK elites. read full story / add a comment
