Protest at the Department of Justice, 94 St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2 at 1PM on Friday July 13th in support of Pat O'Donnell, his son Johnathan O'Donnell, and Enda Carey, who were sentenced to prison yesterday by the judge in Belmullet District Court. They are alleged to have assaulted a Garda in October last year. The charge, which they deny, could not be backed up by any video evidence, nor could the injured Garda say for sure how he was injured or describe the exact circumstances of the alleged assault. Nevertheless, the judge found the three men guilty of assault purely on the evidence of other Gardaí who on duty that morning. Supporters will gather outside the Dept of Justice tomorrow at lunchtime to show solidarity with the men. read full story / add a comment

A heavy garda escort was provided for four African asylum seekers who were being escorted through Shannon airport, loaded on to a Garda 'paddy wagon' and put on a plane back to God knows where, at about 4.30 PM on Wed 11 July 07. October 4th – 10th 2007 is world animal week. Here in Ireland, Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) will organize a nationwide week of action to support our joint ‘Stop Circus Suffering in Ireland’ campaign with our colleagues at Animal Defenders International (www.ad-international.org). Across the country there will be local campaigners gathering petitions, writing letters, contacting the media and staging peaceful protests outside of circuses that use animals. A recent independent report oby a delegation of international human rights and environmental activists has slammed the actions of the Gardai in Mayo for suppressing peaceful protest and creating civil unrest. The report, issued by the Global Community Monitor (GCM), was compiled from evidence gathered at a public hearing as well as through interviews, emails and video footage. This year is the 40th anniversary of the murder of Che Guevara by the CIA in Bolivia. Che was in Bolivia trying to assist the revolution taking place there when he was captured and shot, his last words apparently being “Shoot, coward, you’re going to kill a man”.
