The new government is set to continue the old policies; underfunding healthcare and creating a US-style, for-profit health system. This will only worsen the crisis and must be resisted. The current scandal here in Limerick of people having to travel long distances for dialysis underlines this. For years now the government and HSE have been aware that the dialysis machine in Limerick Regional Hospital is over worked and that one or more new macines are desperately needed. They refused to act, putting costs before service. Now people are forced to travel to Tullamore, Kilkenny or Tralee a few times a week to recieve vital dialysis. read full story / add a comment

Tá stádas na Gaeilge i dtuaisceart na hÉireann níos fearr anois ná a bhí ariamh ó aimsir an chríochdheighilt. Tá pobal Gaeilge bríomhar in iarthar Bhéal Feirste a bhfuil ag dul ó neart go neart comh maith le na mílte taobh amuigh den cathair mór a labhrann Gaeilge. Bunaíodh an chéad Gaeltacht uirbeach in iarthar Bhéal Feirste, is rud iontach é sin do Ghaeil san tuaisceart agus ba cheart go mbeidh misneach orainn uilig a bhfuil ag súil le todhchaí maith d’ár dteanga. read full story / add a comment

I was stunned by the implications of this little story I just spotted on RTE. It seems Dublin hasn't had an IKEA before. How did you escape the stylish homogenous cheaply produced and easy to assemble look ? Will the FF/Green coalition have any influence on peoples' need or want for such furniture & interior bits and bobs? read full story / add a comment

One year on and 6 of the 8 Sudanese men who went on hunger strike in Sweden last summer (http://www.indymedia.ie/article/76869 ), have been granted asylum. One of them got full asylum granted by the migration court. The other five each got one year temporary asylum in order to give them time to prove their identities to the migration board. If they do this they will be granted full asylum next year. The seventh man, who was initially turned down, will have his case heard again due to a procedural flaw in his original application process. The eighth man is still waiting for a decision from the migration board. A ninth Sudanese asylum seeker, who did not hunger strike, has had his application rejected in court. His support group are now applying to the supreme migration court to have the case re-examined. read full story / add a comment |
