Yes, as far as the main stream media was concerned it never happened. It was only a Palestinian journalist who shot by the Israelis. He was then shot twice more by IDF members as he lay injured on the ground. Oh, and 11 palestinians were shot dead by the IDF that day; maybe it got a paragragh somewhere. Full story at link. "It never happened..." John Pilger One of the leaders of demonstrations in Gaza calling for the release of the BBC reporter Alan Johnston was a Palestinian news cameraman, Imad Ghanem. On 5 July, he was shot by Israeli soldiers as he filmed them invading Gaza. A Reuters video shows bullets hitting his body as he lay on the ground. An ambulance trying to reach him was also attacked. The Israelis described him as a "legitimate target". The International Federation of Journalists called the shooting "a vicious and brutal example of deliberate targeting of a journalist". At the age of 21, he has had both legs amputated. read full story / add a comment

The images of the assault of a young woman campaigner at one of the 38 archaelogical sites on the route of the Proposed M3 by members of a private company; and the criminalisation of those campaigners who have given time and energy to forwarding awareness of the ecological and heritage implications of the bi-section of the Gabhra Valley necessitates inquiry. John Gormley has stated that his hands are tied and he can do nothing 'unless something new comes up'. Well ,his hands may be tied but they have not been placed in handcuffs for asserting the individuals right to protest. He has not been jailed for conscientous objection. I am calling on John Gormley to meet with the eight people who have been criminalised and to speak to them about the brutal attacks that we have witnessed on this newswire. The concerns of the campaigns regarding the liscensing of the 38 sites, the abuse of mandate by Minister Roche and the failure of his Dept to engage with the issue. read full story / add a comment

A leaked report for the government and HSE contains plans to close down A&E services in St.John’s, Nenagh and Ennis hospitals. If introduced these cuts will put peoples lives at risk throughout the Mid-west region. These plans must be fought by patients, communities and the trade unions. The report by the firm ‘Teamwork’ will be published in the next few weeks and if it is implemented it will further clog up A&E at the Regional hospital and leave thousands of people in Clare and Tipperary hours away from emergency services. The only reason this is being done is to cut costs. read full story / add a comment

There are important lessons for the Irish Left to learn from the outcome of the recent General Election in the south of Ireland. Not least if the left is to build support and gain momentum at the Ballot box, it must offer its core electorate policies that give hope to Society and especially those within it who are less well off economically. The Left need to collectively draw up a program that advocates re-unification, greater freedom's and democratic accountability, full employment, fairness in the work place, a sustainable environment; affordable homes, and a re-distribution of wealth which brings to an end the massive chasm that has opened up between the wealthy and the majority of the Irish people during Bertie Ahearn's period in office. read full story / add a comment

Maybe the pigeons are coming home to roost after all.., This morning the former prime minister of France & one top dauphin of Chirac faced his first grilling in relation to allegations that he (& others in the DGSE) bugged Sarkozy, smeared Sarkozy & all to hide their role in the biggest corruption scandal in modern history - "the clearstream affair". In the last years of Chirac's presidency I found myself writing quite a bit about Dominique de Villepin the man whom I gave the dubious honour of calling the Dev of our age a man who alas thought to stop a scandal which involves over twenty times the budget of the Irish state getting out of the big shoeboxes they keep for that sort of money with lots of zeros on the end. read full story / add a comment
