Today is the 88th anniversary of the largest 'Mayday' demonstration in Irish history, when what the Belfast Newsletter described as "a little band of disgruntled Red-Socialists" led 100,000 workers through the streets of Belfast. Everywhere else in Ireland in 1919 had also seen massive Mayday demonstrations, 10,000 demonstrated in Burr Co. Offaly. Outside of the North East these had been called for the 1st of May "to demonstrate the solidarity of workers and to reaffirm their adhesion to the principles of self-determination" but Belfast marched to a different theme on the 3rd. North and South a massive wave of working class militancy had grown but although these struggles shared a common rhythm they happened in isolation from each other. read full story / add a comment

Shell has announced its quarterly profits of 6,900,000,000 US dollars are better than expected. Companies don't get this successful by being nice, of course, so here's a brief video showing some of the energy giant's activities around the world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU_3zt-qWIo read full story / add a comment

Carlos the Jackal, a Venezuelan whose real name is Ilich Ramírez Sánchez was for many years the most wanted terrorist on Earth who popped up in fiction and movies. But eventually he was brought to France where he stood trial and stunned everyone with his incoherent gurgling once he took the stand. Honestly fact really disappointed everyone and the Jackal was nothing like the man fiction had portrayed. Well - everyone will get to hear more incoherent gurgling because the Jackal is going back to court. This time he will face charges relating to a bomb on the Toulouse-Paris train el 29/3/82 (5 dead), the offices of the magazine Al Watan Al Arabi in París 22/4/82 (1 dead), a bomb at the Sant Charles station in Marseilles (no dead) and a train in Tain-L'Hermitage 31/12/83 (5 dead). read full story / add a comment

You may well be chuckling to yourself at the notion that men could be victims of domestic violence at all but the ever-increasing incidence of abuse against men in the home and the media’s subconscious conspiracy to keep this very real issue hidden might well surprise you. read full story / add a comment

"There were calls today for an investigation into the Scottish election after polling descended into chaos with tens of thousands spoilt ballot papers, faulty counting machines and bad weather delaying the return of ballot boxes. With two simultaneous elections being held under three different voting systems, some seats saw more than a 1,000 spoilt papers being discarded. Although the SNP leader, Alex Salmond, won his own seat and appeared set for a narrow national victory, a result is not now expected until the early afternoon." or several weeks if the legal challenges are succesful. Thus it is very difficult to say how the Scottish have "voted" or "not voted". read full story / add a comment

As the General Election looms, and the EPA hearing draws to a close, Áine Ryan draws a few conclusions about the current state of play in Corrib saga in the current edition of the Mayo news. She points out that Shell have no approved route for their pipeline, and when they come up with one (if they ever do) they will have to go through the whole process again. They also have to deal with the fact that politicians like Martin Ferris and Tommy Broughan could well be in the government next month, and the Shell to Sea campaign, although shaken by police brutality, has not gone away... read full story / add a comment

This is a link to a story published on one of the Women's sites in October 2006, by a Polish activist and rights campaigner. She was delighted with the ability of women to work in unity over shared areas of concern which normally would not be in their political interests, but the results of globalised economy and cultural debasement had made the interests of unity pertinent to all the women who worked together. The image is of campaigners who worked on justice for the dissappeared in Guatemala, their campaign against debasement is ongoing. read full story / add a comment
