China has cancelled Christmas in Hong Kong this year. Officials have ordered that the usual celebrations be 'toned down'. It's part of a creeping intolerance that leaves churches fearing for the future, says John MacNab.

As an exercise in representative government the current General Election campaign is a shambles. Instead of a debate about the future direction of government we have the second round of a controversy that should never have had a first round. If Taoiseach Bertie Ahern had any questions to answer about his personal financial arrangements fifteen years ago, the place for him to do so was and is before the Mahon Tribunal. Instead we have a distracting witchhunt against a politician with a long, well regarded record of service to the state.

Today was the official opening of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. The idea is to provide a civilian oversight of the Gardaí and provide a way for people to make complaints about the police without going through the Guards themselves. Unfortunately, only invited members of the corporate media were allowed into the opening, so this indymedia report is confined to the outside of the building.

Amazingly, the Gardaí tried to stop me taking pictures on the pavement outside, and even tried to block the camera. Eventually after trying to interrogate me they stopped and sulked from a distance. I think they realised that they couldn't arrest me outside the GSOC offices on their opening day, but they were certainly considering it for a while...

As part of the ongoing IPSC campaign against the Grafton group, who own Woodie's and Atlantic Homecare, and their aiding and abetting of the Israeli economy through the sale of Israeli manufactured goods, chiefly Keter plastic garden sheds and wheelbarrows, eight of our Galway activists picketed the Atlantic Homecare branch in the Wellpark Retail Park and the Woodies one in the Galway Retail Park, eliciting, except for some malodorous shite and abuse, a sweet response from passing pedestrians and especially in our walk from Atlantic Homecare to Woodies, with all flags flying, a very sweet one from motorists. read full story / add a comment

Bingo! it took 3 years or was it 40? to riot the centre of Paris

Two days ago no-one accused Segolene Royal of scare-tactics, dirty electioneering, or any kind of pre-Uachtaran vulgarity when she remarked that riots would greet a Sarkozy victory.

Accordingly 3,000 riot cops were deployed in central Paris. All the riots where kids burned cars before were in the periphery. To the relief of the establishment the anger didn't leave the ugly quarters.

Then Sarkozy won. Overall on 85% of electorate with 50.19%. In posh central 16ème arrondissement where he will now live "in a certain insecurity" he got 80.81% but out in ugliesville 20ème arrondissement Paris he only got 35.37%.

What was ugliesville to do? Burn their buses and be ignored again? read full story / add a comment
