In advance of the annual USI Congress, Red Wedge previewed proceedings with an article "What is to be done with the Union of Students in Ireland?" In this article, he offers an eyewitness account of the event and some thoughts on the future of the student movement.
It soon becomes clear that McGuirk - a former officer of the Freedom Institute who has been involved with both Ogra Fianna Fail and young Fine Gael, is too progressive for many of the 200 or so delegates who represent student unions from across Ireland. His plea for USI to continue its link with SIPTU and for the annual congress not to axe the deputy president position who co-ordinates campaigns is warmly received by the UCD delegation. No one else in the hall welcomes these words. Maurice Roes contribution is interrupted by regular applause. His final bit of auction politics in his call for support is that he will ensure that a new website will be constructed if he is elected-sets the congress on fire. read full story / add a comment

Erased from the historical record for many years (literally in the case of Elizabeth O'Farrell) the women of the 1916 to 1923 period of Irish history are starting to be recognised once again for the important role they played in the struggle for Irish freedom. Today in Dublin, a local history group organised a commemoration of the brave women who fought alongside the men in the fight against British rule and the establishment of the Free State. The march was led by a colour party of women wearing the uniforms of Cumann na mBán and the Irish Citizens Army. Photographs of many of the women were carried on the march. read full story / add a comment

Venezuela has an interesting relationship with the energy giant Shell. They actually force them to pay taxes, and when they submit estimates which the govt doesn't believe, they audit them and present them with a bill. Today they told Shell to pay back over thirteen million dollars that the company was trying to weasel out of from 2005. The Irish government, of course, has a more compliant attitude to the big energy companies... read full story / add a comment

The five area-based Community Development Projects in Limerick City have called for all-party support for John Fitzgerald’s recommendations for improving life for people in the city’s disadvantaged communities. Volunteers and workers from the five Community Development Projects also want the Government – before the Dail dissolves in three weeks or so – to set up the proposed Regeneration Boards on a statutory basis. Only 5 per cent, or one in 20, of 15 to 24-year-olds could quote the first of the 10 Commandments when interviewed for a new survey in Ireland. Almost one-third (32 per cent) could not say where Jesus was born and more than one-third (35 per cent) did not know what is celebrated at Easter. These are among the findings, published today, of an opinion poll conducted last December and January by Lansdowne Market Research for the (Catholic) Iona Institute and the (Protestant) Evangelical Alliance Ireland group. The survey involved a representative sample of 950 people nationwide. read full story / add a comment

Some people don't think much of elections, but it's important to remnember that they concentrate the minds of the establishment. From Spain in the 30's, Chile in the 70's, to modern day Venezuela, democratic elections have thrown up results which have rocked the forces of right-wing conservatism to the core. While some people think you shouldn't vote, most people believe it's important to register. read full story / add a comment

In news sneaked out late on Good Friday, the Irish government has announced that the country has just gotten a bit bigger. We now have the right to extend our territorial waters beyond the 200 mile limit. Because of today's news. we can claim a much larger chunk of the Atlantic sea bed off the south-west coast. Sadly, we don't get the fishing rights. But if there should, by some chance, be oil and gas there, then we own it*. So that's good news then. *Note: This development is going to mean more to certain members of the political establishment than to, for instance, pensioners, or people on hospital waiting lists. The big energy companies might be happy tonight too, wheras children in overcrowded, underfunded schools won't notice much difference. read full story / add a comment

This week's Mayo Advertiser reports that Shell are very happy with the progress of peat removal from their refinery site at Bellanaboy in County Mayo, which started earlier this week. The surface of the site has to be removed before construction of the refinery can begin. The Gardaí say they are also happy with their operation, reporting that they have easily contained the demonstrations and protests. The massive Garda operation has been widely criticised, with those opposed to the Shell/Govt scheme arguing that if protesters are breaking the law they should be arrested, and if not they should not be interfered with. To date there have been no arrests in this current phase of the conflict. read full story / add a comment
