Iggy Madden of Iggy Madden Haulage Ltd, Galway, crony, “close friend and confidante,” whatever, of shady Frank Fahey, was the target of Galway Shell to Sea’s concern this afternoon on account of the imminent removal by his firm of some 660,000 metric tonnes of blanket bog from Shell’s proposed gas refinery in Bellanaboy and dumped in a Bord Na Mona cutaway bog in Bangor Erris despite serious ecological concerns for such a venture. As karma or serendipity would have it, the great man himself was to hand when 13 Shell to Sea activists, prior to a picketing of his depot, were handing in a letter of protest to his docklands offices. Instead of hearing our plaints with a fair ear we were verbally abused, instead, and subjected to diplomacy of the bar room, redneck, kind ; “I’ll shove yer camera up yer arse” "Do ya have a job" etc, etc. So it goes. read full story / add a comment

Next Protest at Shannon Many people wonder why so few protesters turn up for protests at Shannon airport. They frequently ask why does'nt someone organise something. The answer to this is, why dont you? This is your airport too, and the children killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are all of our children. Please don't give up on this most serious of issues, please make it an issue in the comming election. We need weekly protests at Shannon airport on a continuous basis not only up to the election at the end of May but also afterwards, so that the next Government don't take our silence as agreement with Irish Government complicity in crimes against humanity. read full story / add a comment

The 24th of March 2007 was the 27th anniversary of the death of Archbishop Oscar Romero who was murdered in San Salvador at the orders of Roberto D'Aubisson. For the first time in 26 years the annual mass to commerorate him was refused permission in the friary of Adam and Eve's Church in Dublin. Adam and Eve's Church is a Franciscan Basillica on the Liffey quays just opposite the Four Courts and has educated many Missionaries who work in all parts of the world. Before Romero was murdered he was denounced by the Catholic church and ignored by the Carter Regime. http://demopedia.democraticunderground.com/index.php/Os...omero read full story / add a comment

Members of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign manned stalls in Galway and Limerick on Saturday to highlight the clandestine trade in Israeli diamonds. Irish consumers are unaware that most of the diamonds sold in Ireland are crafted in Apartheid Israel, the worlds leading exporter of cut/polished diamonds. This year gemstone exports from Apartheid Israel are expected to approximate $18-$20 billion or more than 150% of Apartheid Israel’s $12 billion military budget for 2007. Diamond exports comprise 30% of Apartheid Israel’s total manufacturing exports and are the backbone of the apartheid regime’s economy. Consumers need to be made aware that when they purchase diamonds they are likely to be supporting the illegal occupation and brutal subjugation of the Palestinian people. read full story / add a comment

This interesting article from a hearing earlier thos week into safety at energy refineries makes scary reading for anyone who is being forced to live with one of these monsters on their doorstep. It seems that in the first six weeks of this year, there were 43 reported serious incidents inthe United States, any one of which could have turned into a major disaster. A former member of Shell's staff spoke about two incidents at the refinery where he worked (in Washington). One of these was a near miss but could easily have resulted in a huge fire cloud, the other caused six deaths among contractors. It seems in a majority of cases, poor safety procedures are to blame. Looking back on the 2005 fire I was reminded of this quotation from a Texas City Resident. Mr. Herman Batist: "Anytime you live by a plant like this, you've got to worry about this kind of situation. They don't happen very often, but when they do, the first thing you check is which way the wind is blowing" read full story / add a comment

Protesters from Dublin Shell to Sea managed to evade the heavy security at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis this morning. A number of activists held a protest at the main door of the Ard Fheis venue inside the City West complex. A banner was unfurled and one protester spoke to conference delegates through a megaphone, pointing out that the people of Ireland were being forced by the government to watch as their natural resources were handed over to Shell and Statoil, with nothing coming back, while the people of Erris have to put up with the severe degradation of their environment and unacceptable risks to their lives. The protesters, some of whom were wearing masks of Bertie Ahern and Noel Dempsey, were soon surrounded by Gardaí and security guards. read full story / add a comment

Sinn Féin are calling for five hundred new buses for Dublin. The money is there, but the Govt won't act because the PD's insist that the new buses must be for privately-run routes. So while their neo-con ideology insists on more subsidies for their friends in big business, Dublin commuters have to wait at bus stops. In the rain. In Fairview. read full story / add a comment |
