One of the activists from the Hill of Tara vigil camp has sent a message
to activists and people who are in solidarity with the desire of the campaign
to Save Tara to support the vigil:

A Legal challenge , today, failed to put a stop to the PPP, and the works
are to begin in earnest in 72 hours. There are possibly some options to challenge
the issue but a lot have been worn out , the vigil campaign is quite small and very
dedicated. They have asked for support in the form of tech for evidence, and solidarity
protests in the next couple of days. read full story / add a comment

The Union of Students in Ireland organised today a protest about the blood ban operated by the Department of Health on Gay men.

It is now widely accepted that the best way to ensure a safe blood supply is to refuse blood from anyone engaged in high risk behaviour - rather than the current situation where hetrosexuals engaged in high risk promiscuous sexual activity will have their blood accepted while gay men involved low risk monogamous relationships will have their blood refused. read full story / add a comment

The Milvian bridge over the Tiber in Rome was first built in 206 BC out of wood and only lasted a hundred years being replaced by one made of stone in 115BC the bulk of which survives to this day though there have been renovations most notably in 1429 (common era) Francesco da Genazzano was responsible for saving it from near collapse. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the bridge was modified by two artists, Valadier and Pigiani who added the lamps. It was on this bridge that one of the pivotal moments of Western History and God's usual meddling in the affairs of men is thought to have happened. Though lest I upset anyone may I stress now that God only meddles on the side of rich and powerful men such as emperors. But the point of this article is not to report on God (who is silent these days) but to report on something small yet not trivial which illustrates the nature of the Italian ruling class. read full story / add a comment

Some of you might have noticed your stock in BP, Exxon-Mobil, Chevron-Teaxaco, Conoco-Philips go down today. I know I didn't - but I did have to field any faxes from the French "Total" and Norwegian "Statoil". No bother - I just take the paper out of the machine.

Hugo Chavez has decreed a nationalisation of the Orinoco River strip which will come into effect on the 1st of May 2007. He explained this to his beloved people during the last episode of his regular TV show "Hola Presidente!".

John Monaghan is a resident of Rossport county Mayo and part of the Shell To Sea campaign. Shell's pipeline, if it were built, would be located less than 70m from his home. Here he speaks about how the jailing of his father in law Micheál Ó Seighin drew him into the campaign and how the struggle against Shell has raised greater national questions for him about local democracy and control of natural resources.

"Every problem we are facing in this country right now, like the health crisis...seems to be a lack of money, and we are giving this natural resource away when we should be developing it for the good of the country."

John also discusses last fridays direct action, which stopped work at the refinery site for the first time since it began last October, and how the campaign can move on from here. read full story / add a comment
