The new president of University College Cork, Dr Michael Murphy, has been quick off the blocks to establish a rapport with the media and reassure his audience that the new presidency, executive and governing body can be trusted going forward. But what about the past, what about the very serious allegations raised against UCC and what about the repercussions of the Malone Report? Any attempt to sweep the many outstanding matters at UCC under the carpet is likely to further inflame the situation read full story / add a comment

Apologists for Shell in the Corrib Gas dispute often quote the company's assurances on safety as if they were unquestionable. Shell likes to portray itself as a large company with a strong commitment to safety, especially the safety of its workers.

However, continuing judgements against Shell tell a different story, as this Guardian article from yesterday shows. Some commmentators say the dismal safety record of the company shows that there is a policy within Shell of weighing up the potential cost of paying out damages for death or injury against the cost of implementing safety measures. When the former is less than the latter, Shell is prepared to put lives at risk, showing that the company's main concern is its profit margin, and that this comes a long way before woorrying about safety. read full story / add a comment

At 1am this morning I was called by the Melbourne Sun Herald to comment on mainstream Australian media reporting a payout from the Victorian government to some of us assaulted at the World Economic Forum 2000 in Melbourne.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,2132....html

Reports refer to me as a "serial protestor" -even tho' I don't lobby protest, sign petitions,vote- and place me in the wrong place at the wrong time for when the police bashed me. I assured the journalist whatever financial payout the Victorian state gives me wil go to funding further nonviolent resistance to war and transnational theft! read full story / add a comment

Today members of Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) held a hugely eye catching event outside of Brown Thomas on Grafton Street in Dublin to held push the campaign. With two activists posing ‘dead’ inside coffins whilst clutching signs reading “Brown Thomas – Fur Is Dead” other members of ARAN also held posters reading “Your Fur Had A Face” and others held our synonymous animal rights banner “Speak Out For Animal Rights” this banner continues to appear at various ARAN events around the country.
