On Friday 26th, Ógra Shinn Féin sent a delegation across to London to take part in the 8th Annual Inter-Isles Forum. This years Forum theme was on Faith and State. Ógra’s discussion document, which proposed the complete separation between Faith and State, was the view shared by a majority of the other parties present. Although the theme of the weekend was on Faith and State, there was a wide range of discussion outside of the main events. Topics ranging from alternate fuel sources, to the break up of the Union and everything in between were brought up at different points. read full story / add a comment

The UK Guardian is reporting that Shell along with its Spanish amigo, Repsol, have signed a $10 "initial" deal with the Iranians to develop a liquefied natural gas project centred on the South Pars gas field : "The move is a bold one by Shell because its arch-rival BP has declared itself unwilling to invest in Iran at a time when the international political climate surrounding the country is so forbidding ... Washington has increased pressure on non-US companies in the past year not to invest in Iran and some analysts believe it could be hard for oil companies to maintain operations in both Iran and the United States, where Shell and its Spanish partner Repsol both have fields". read full story / add a comment

Anyone who has had a child in primary school over the past couple of years has no doubt heard of the ‘Tesco Computers for Schools’ scheme whereby in return for vouchers collected when you do your shopping, Tesco give ‘free’ computer equipment to schools. You’ve probably also heard about Tesco’s ‘Sport For Schools and Clubs’ and SuperValu’s ‘Kids in Action’ schemes. If you’ve seen the TV ads for the SuperValu version, you’ll probably associate SuperValu with healthy, happy kids. read full story / add a comment

According to the Independent (UK) : "Magistrates have jailed Lindis Percy, 64, after she failed to pay fines and court costs relating to a protest outside the United States Signal Intelligence Station, in Harrogate, North Yorkshire". The pensioner undertakes weekly vigils at the US intelligence station. She formed the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB) in 1992 and was sent to jail in March 2003, as the invasion of Iraq began. Though her protests have resulted in 12 prison sentences before, including a four-and-a-half-month spell in Holloway jail, Percy was adamant that she was not guilty of the crime that led to Friday's court appearance: wilful obstruction of the highway outside Menwith Hill, on 10 and 31 January last year. read full story / add a comment

This morning as thousands of delegates went to the Ard Fheis of Sinn Fein in Dublin to discuss policing matters & shock the unionists by saying "yes" & of course include plastic bullets in the list of lethal weapons - elsewhere the road to peace, dialogue & inter-community relations seems as daunting as ever before. The Basque moderate nationalists PNV who hold and have held the democratic majority in Euskadi launched the counter-offensive against the Spanish state judiciary who have put the Lehandakari (taoiseach) in the dock "for talking to Batasuna". Meanwhile thousands of people including many hundreds of "heavy weights" from the world of culture & intelligentsia concentrated in Barcelona to demand dialogue more than 80 entities took part including all left wing parties & Catalan nationalist formations & many Basque peace groups. read full story / add a comment

Deja vu revisited ; Who amongst us, except those in wilful contemptible amnesia, can forget Lt Weiner's, 24th Panzer Division, powerful description of hell on earth in Stalingrad : " We have fought during fifteen days for a single house, with mortars, grenades, machine-guns and bayonets. Already by the third day fifty-four German corpses are strewn in the cellars, on the landings, and the staircases. The front is a corridor between burnt-out rooms; it is the thin ceiling between two floors. Help comes from neighbouring houses by fire escapes and chimneys. There is a ceaseless struggle from noon to night. From storey to storey, faces black with sweat, read full story / add a comment
