"Pain, tears, fear, hatred. But also euphoria, the desire to see an end to war and to fascism, the longing to create a new Italy. Life had a meaning in those days; it wasn't just a matter of dragging yourself from one day to next. Why deny it? Ettore knew: those months in the mountains had been the finest in his life. Afterwards there had been nothing of real interest. He didn't head for home. He turned into Via Lame, and arrived at the Porta. The sky was full of stars, hundreds of stars, maybe thousands. He had done it a thousand time, and he did it again. He remembered the battle, shot for shot. There was fog, and someone shouted, 'Garibaldi's fighting!' He had yelled with all his might, 'Red Star is winning!' " Ettore in ‘54’ p.310 read full story / add a comment

Over 60 people attended a public meeting in Dublin on Saturday afternoon during which Caoimhe Butterly spoke movingly of her experiences in war-torn Lebanon over the past six months. Caoimhe very strongly highlighted the western media's tendency to depict the Lebanese simply as 'victims' of Israeli aggression while never showing their dignity and resiliance in the face of death, destruction and invasion. She spoke about the mass movement currently on the streets of Beirut and how it is cross-party and cross-community, and, potentially, poses a threat to the confessional nature of the Lebanese state. read full story / add a comment

Today the mail brought the Pro-life camapign through my door, or as I would consider it unsolicited junk mail. Notably, however this time I read it because I was struck by the design on the colour leaflet and because it represents a step up in the upcoming constittutional referendum on the rights of the child by the right -wing in this country. No surprises there really. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 6th January, Cosantori Siochana, hosted a 24 hour peace camp at Shannon Airport. This vigil coincided with the fourth anniversary of the first peace camp conceived on Nollaig na mBan during the build up to Geoge W. Bush’s war in Iraq. This was during a time when the world was mobilizing for war and peace. In year that the world screamed for leadership our weak kneed government signed its name to the death warrant of hundreds of Iraqi citizens. This act of treachery, praised by Bush, denied by Ahern. The murder perpetuates itself on daily basis on the streets, in the markets and in every state building with the butchers drying their hands through sands of the Iraqi desert read full story / add a comment

Dr Freddy Karup Pedersen has been involved in activities of Institute Veolia and is thus indirectly involved in this violation of international law. read full story / add a comment
