This morning as thousands of delegates went to the Ard Fheis of Sinn Fein in Dublin to discuss policing matters & shock the unionists by saying "yes" & of course include plastic bullets in the list of lethal weapons - elsewhere the road to peace, dialogue & inter-community relations seems as daunting as ever before. The Basque moderate nationalists PNV who hold and have held the democratic majority in Euskadi launched the counter-offensive against the Spanish state judiciary who have put the Lehandakari (taoiseach) in the dock "for talking to Batasuna". Meanwhile thousands of people including many hundreds of "heavy weights" from the world of culture & intelligentsia concentrated in Barcelona to demand dialogue more than 80 entities took part including all left wing parties & Catalan nationalist formations & many Basque peace groups. read full story / add a comment

Deja vu revisited ; Who amongst us, except those in wilful contemptible amnesia, can forget Lt Weiner's, 24th Panzer Division, powerful description of hell on earth in Stalingrad : " We have fought during fifteen days for a single house, with mortars, grenades, machine-guns and bayonets. Already by the third day fifty-four German corpses are strewn in the cellars, on the landings, and the staircases. The front is a corridor between burnt-out rooms; it is the thin ceiling between two floors. Help comes from neighbouring houses by fire escapes and chimneys. There is a ceaseless struggle from noon to night. From storey to storey, faces black with sweat, read full story / add a comment

The damage done by the Catholic Church need not be gone over again. The fact that this story headlined the Guardian this week is apposite. The esssential thing is that gay couples have the right to adopt and bring up a child. Mr Tony Blair is sympathetic to the stance of the church- offering an exemption to the church agencies. read full story / add a comment

Crystal Alliance, the private consortium of multi-national companies contracted to collect water charges on behalf of Northern Ireland Water Ltd., will be holding an open recruitment day on Thursday 1st February This company recently caused outrage when it was revealed that they had categorised working class communities as 'Rock Bottom' and wealthy areas as 'Affluent Achievers' as part of a strategy to try and cope with mass non-payment of water charges The We Won't Pay Campaign has called this protest to remind Crystal Alliance and the Government that they will not get away with bullying people into paying water charges. Our campaign has popularised mass non-payment and we will not allow these specialist debt collectors to harass and intimidate people into paying this double tax The We Won't Pay Campaign calls on everyone who is opposed to water charges to come to this protest and bring along friends, workmates and family For more info contact 90311778 or 07743282321 read full story / add a comment

Last Tuesday in his State of the Union address, Bush was explicit about the future of the US war machine in Iraq and further afield : "to design and establish a volunteer civilian reserve corps. Such a corps would function much like our military reserve. It would ease the burden on the Armed Forces by allowing us to hire civilians with critical skills to serve on missions abroad when America needs them". However, this force, this outsourcing of privateers is already doing its lethal work in Iraq and Afghanistan, read full story / add a comment
