galway / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Saturday December 23, 2006 20:41 by TD
Rather than head off to their respective homes for the Xmas break, a group of out of town activists based in Galway procrastinated the sweet inevitable for a day in order to bear witness to suffering Palestine. An information table was manned outside Lynch's castle,Shop st, where flyers on Israel's Apartheid Wall were handed out to passing pedestrians. The peak experience of the day was Khaled from Palestine, chancing upon us and visiting serious heartening appreciation on our efforts after joining us for the remainder of our five hour stint. read full story / add a comment

With Richard away in Cratloe, Shane in Dunshaughlin, Tanya in, etc, etc ,for the duration of the Xmas period, Galway Shell to Sea could only muster two of its activists to do picket duty outside the Shell Westside Service Station this afternoon, nevertheless, there was no appreciable lack of feedback from the passing motorists and pedestrians with one woman marooned in the gridlocked traffic beckoning us over for a chat regarding Shell - its wings severely clipped yesterday by Putin and Gazprom in regards to the Sakhalin 2 project. read full story / add a comment

Soon afterwards a representatives of Dublin Brigade INLA read out a speech which included the condeming of those criminal elements (who are not and never where members of the Republican Socialist Movement) who use the name of the INLA to line there pockets. The representative stated that Dublin INLA had a list of names of these parasites and that a number of them had been forcibly warned to desist from there activities or face serious concequences. In light of the Moriarty Tribunal report into payments made to Charles J. Haughey, it seems as good a time as any to reflect on the career and influence of one of the most controversial politicians - some would say the most controversial politian - that Ireland has ever seen. We now have a clearer, almost forensic, understanding of what Haughey gained from public office, but what about the balance to that? What did he give to the Irish people? What did he leave behind? What is his true legacy? read full story / add a comment

international / environment / other press Monday December 18, 2006 23:48 by S.Cat
Everyone remembers the appalling events surrounding the murder of anti-Shell activists including Ken Saro Wiwa in Nigeria in 1995. But the hot summer of ''95 was also the year of the Greenpeace campaign against Shell UK to stop the company from dumping the Brent Spar platform at sea. Talking to Shell people, you find that they still feel that they were right, and the British environmental group was misguided when it campaigned to have the disused rig dismantled on shore. But nevertheless, the debate was certainly won by Greenpeace, with Shell eventually giving in after a large scale campaign of direct action, blockades, occupations and pickets. The fact that Russian environmentalists have got in touch with the lawyers who represented Greenpeace, as outlined in the Guardian story below, must be causing disquiet in the Shell boardroom. They can only hope that Russian internal politics might mean a way out for them, or else their shareholders will have more to worry about in 2007. read full story / add a comment
