RTE breach their opinion poll guidelines and fail to publish a key poll finding

Shell to Sea deplores the selective and biased account in today’s Irish Independent of the RedC opinion poll. There is an inaccurate and disgraceful manipulation of the opinion poll findings. This represents a new low in media misrepresentation of the issues. It appears that RTE has breached its own guidelines on conducting opinion polls.

Particular care must be taken when joint polls with other organisations are planned. If for example the costs of a poll are shared with a newspaper, programme makers must be aware that the same constraints of impartiality do not apply to newspapers as apply to RT and that the high-lighting of particular data in the newspapers may reflect on the impartiality of RTE … Programme-makers must be wary of the possibility of data from polling and its interpretation being used in a partisan or propagandist way (RTE Guidelines) read full story / add a comment

DEFENCE MINISTER Willie O’Dea was at the centre of another embarrassing gaffe last night after it was claimed he was forced to pull out of the launch of the biography of the famed Limerick IRA man Sean South of Garryowen.

The minister, who is also from Limerick, withdrew from the event claiming he did not realise who the book was about when he agreed to do the launch. The biography by Des Fogerty is entitled Sean South of Garryowen.

Bush has now authorised spying on Alcatel. Alcatel has a large operation in Ireland and if Bush has his way and the NSA has the right to examine all Alcatels' records and keep it under constant surveillance, the calls of Irish mobile phone users will be available to the US. All because Bush claims Alcatel, "might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States". read full story / add a comment

Over 20 activists initiated the daylight blockade of the central Birmingham Shell station. Three protestors 'locked on' in the entrance to prevent access to the station whilst others strung banners across the exits and a ledge looking over the forecourt (pictures to come). There were no serious encounters with motorists and passers by were generally supportive of the demo, the aims of which were to disrupt Shell's operations and to raise awareness of the struggle of the community of County Mayo, Ireland against Shell's construction of a dangerous and experimental pipeline which poses not only a danger to the environment of this idyllic part of Ireland but also the people of County Mayo. Protestors also tried to obtain a statement from the company but were unsuccessful.

Pierre Gemayel (zh?m?'?l) was the leader of the Kataeb, the fascist Maronite Christian Phalangist party. These are anti-arab race supremacists who hark back to the good old colonial days when the French put them in charge of the 'wee province' of Lebanon they had partitioned off from Syria. In those days the favoured Maronites were at the top of the racial hierarchy which the French used to secure their control.
