ETA prisoner José Ignacio de Juana Chaos has commenced another hunger strike. He did so on the eve of his sentancing in protest against the expected term of 12.5 years, which has been handed down by the Spanish court this sentance is for promoting terrorism , [ de Juana Chaos authored a series of articles calling for the continuation & escalation of ETA's armed campaign. ] The Spanish prime minister Zapatero has said in a statement that he expects the sentance (by the independent judiciary) will further complicate the nascent Basque Peace Process. Already most observers recognise that the process is in crises, the internal ETA magazine only a week ago threatened a return to violence if political progress in not seen to be made by late Autumn. Though critics of Basque seperatism would point out that since late Spring over 120 incidents of arson have been attributed to the group & one theft of 350 arms. read full story / add a comment

When the leader of a political party with a track record on social policy like Fianna Fail’s starts talking about children’s rights, it’s time to sit up and be alarmed – particularly so when it is in the vicinity of a general election. Fianna Fail are a party who have perfected the art of claiming to do one thing while in fact doing its opposite. The issue of child protection should not be used as a back door through which further reductions in the rights of parents to secure adequate state services for their children is introduced. read full story / add a comment

In the last week this year's "transparency org" world corruption perception report has been published. It's a report which is taken seriously by some, and certainly no country looking for foreign investment wants to be at the bottom of the 163 states ranked this year. (Interestingly the world boasted 158 states for last year's report) But both the annual list of "corruption perception" and "bribery perception" indices, can not be understood as isolated statistics. Just as Greenspan's biographer assured us he takes stock of over 4000 weekly indicators, we can not consider just one single country or economy when discussing corruption or bribery. Nor can we refuse to draw in other human development indicators, (the UNHDR report) all the usual "facts and figures" and internal data. read full story / add a comment

Many people in Dublin, including a lot of DCC staff, have expressed dismay that the Council has an exclusive deal whcih means that they must refuel at Shell garages. A large crowd from Shell to Sea joined the Sinn Féin councillors before the meeting to show support for Daithí's suggestion that the deal be scrapped. read full story / add a comment

An important event is taking place on Wednesday and Thursday (8th to 9th November) in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin. Ireland’s Atlantic “Petroleum Province” is being discussed. Confused? This “Province” consists of all the Irish Atlantic oil and gas fields that have been explored so far. At present, the Irish Government is handing out licences to Shell, Exxon-Mobil, Statoil, and others as fast as they can. The Irish Government and the global oil and gas industry are working in close partnership, and have been for many years. Shell and Statoil, the energy multinationals involved in the Corrib project, will be represented, as will the Minister for Marine and Natural Resources, who is to give the opening address. read full story / add a comment
