Malcolm Richter's Body was found beside, " A video-camera, a canister of Gasoline, a sign reading 'Thou shalt not kill' . He self-immolated publicly in Chicago during early morning rush-hour on November the third. The death witnessed by hundreds of people did not make the 'press'. Oaxaca did not make the mainstream either. A website focusing on his antiwar activites has been opened with an appeal to tell his story. With his contemptible inversion and perversion of events in Erris last Friday, Demsey is rubbing salt into the wounds of the activists who journeyed to Rossport to engage in democratic protest and, were greeted instead with its antithesis : Brown Shirted thuggery in the form of wanton batoning, punching, kicking, treading on, women being tossed over fences like capers, vilication, goading, etc, the list of Gardai brutality and veniality is endless. read full story / add a comment
national / anti-capitalism / opinion/analysis Thursday November 16, 2006 18:47 by Stephanie Lord
It’s that time of year again folks. Yep, it’s budget time. But this year is a little different due to the upcoming elections scheduled for this summer. Brian Cowen has got his Santa Claus costume on again and he’s going to open his magic sack and give us what we all want for crimbo. Because of course, we have been very good boys and girls all year – and haven’t passed even one motion of “no confidence” in his government. This, despite the fact that Bertie has been up to his eyes in crap all year. No surprise I suppose, and from what I make of it they’ll be back in again next term with Labour. Sure with their sluttish ways, it’s quite obvious that if they’re so willing to get into bed with the Blueshirts, they’d jump into the leaba with anybody (i.e. Fianna Fail) and to hell with the “working man” they claim to stand for……but that’s another story….. read full story / add a comment

Professor Enda McDonagh, the Chairman of the Governing Body of UCC, has announced the identity and remit of the "external and independent" person to review allegations of "corruption", financial mismanagement and bullying at the university. In a move that seems destined to delay rather than supplant a formal enquiry, the remit is to exclude all issues that have already been put before the Governing Body and to include input from Professor Michael Shattock, a co-author of the OECD Report on Higher Education in Ireland that is central to UCC's own restructuring plans (http://www.ucc.ie/en/restructuring/). The oversight of the review process by the very people either involved in, or investigating, the excluded allegations would appear to generate the potential for significant conflicts of interest. read full story / add a comment
