West Tyrone Ógra Shinn Féin organised a tour of Long Kesh Concentration Camp, last Friday 29th September. The tour was very emotive as the delegation visited the hospital wing where 10 Irish Republican Prisoners bravely give their life on Hungerstrike 25 years ago.

The Cages, and H4 were also visited.

All together 16 Young Republican activists attended the tour and witnessed at first hand Long Kesh, the site of so much tragedy and torture, yet also massive resilience and struggle.

We salute the Prisoners, the Blanketmen and the Hungerstrikers! read full story / add a comment

On Tuesday 26th September, Magee Ogra Shinn Fein held a recruitment drive in the university grounds. The Magee cumann has been active in the University for a number years and still remains the only active political society on the campus.

Ogra Shinn Fein were ecxluded from the freshers fayre as they refused to sign the political protocol which was introduced by the University of Ulster and endorsed by the Students Union.

The protocol censors political activity and effectively meant that Ogra could not hand out any literature which which would identify them as being a political society. Undeterred by this absurd decision, the cumann set up outside the Sports Hall.

The subject of climate change is getting increasing attention in our media, although articles on the subject still tend to be confined to small pages on the back pages of our newspapers. Professor Gerry Wrixon is entering his last term at University College Cork, having inexplicably tendered his resignation after winning a bitterly divisive contest to extend his tenure. He has presided over one of the most acrimonious and difficult periods of UCC’s history. Persistent allegations of financial and other impropriety at the university have dogged him, not least of which are those referred to in an article in the Irish Examiner last week and echoed by the former President Michael Mortell this week. They claim:

* Appointments were made corruptly
* Breaches of the law, of university statutes and regulations
* Intimidation and bullying of staff
* A general failure of governance
* Concerns about the use of public monies
* Unsustainable levels of debt were being accumulated under Prof Wrixon’s tenure

But the Examiner reports are only the half of it.

Mangroves in indus delta
international / environment / opinion/analysis Sunday October 01, 2006 19:57 by Qasim Rajpar   image 4 images
The Indus Delta faces major degradation threats that could well result in catastrophe. The major cause of destruction of the Delta is the reduction in the flow of fresh water from Indus River. As the delta dries up and the mangrove forests decline, the sea is slowly sweeping in. The Delta is now said to be only 10 percent of its original area. read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin was joined by Gerry Adams on Saturday to launch the Dublin Health Rally.

Some Ógra activists held posters while others dressed up as patients on a hospital trolley, representing the massive waiting lists that currently passes as a Health Service in the 26 Counties.

National Organiser of Ógra, Barry McColgan said,

'I urge all Ógra activists to mobilise themselves and their community for the Public Health Rally in Dublin - ÓSF will form up in a contingent for the rally and 'Suicide Prevention' will be the theme. This is a opportune event in which to actively force our demands on Suicide Prevention and Health Care. '

Death Fugue (Paul Celan)

Black milk of daybreak we drink it at sundown
we drink it at noon in the morning we drink it at night
we drink and we drink it
we dig a grave in the breezes there one lies unconfined
A man lives in the house he plays with the serpents he writes
he writes when dusk falls to Germany your golden hair
Margarete
he writes it and steps out of doors and the stars are flashing he
whistles his pack out
he whistles his Jews out in earth has them dig for a grave
he commands us strike up for the dance
