A very interesting article in the Irish Times today, considering the background to the siting of the giant gas refinery that Shell seek to construct at Beal an Átha Buí (known in English as Ballinaboy, Bellinaboy or Bellanaboy). The views in the article are worth paying attention to, since the authors are extremely well-qualified to comment on this subject. Leo Corcoran was previously Engineering Manager of Bord Gáis and Brian Coyle is a partner with consulting engineers Coyle Kennedy. Perhaps rather than arguing with people who are not as well qualified to discuss these issues on the comments section of indymedia articles on the continuing occupation of Erris by Shell and their security forces, we should simply refer people to this piece. read full story / add a comment

The country took one step closer to water privatisation recently with the announcement that Celtic Anglian Water have landed the contract for the Waste Water Treatment Plant, part of the Waterford Main Drainage Project. The Irish Examiner described them as ‘the international division of Anglian Water’. However, a quick scan of the company’s website tells a different story, Anglian water have only a 50% stake. ‘Celtic Anglian water’ (CAW), is listed on the NTR (national toll roads) website as a subsidiary company. Along with such shining lights of Irish capitalism as Greenstar, Airtricity, Bioverda, Irish Broadband and National Toll Roads themselves. http://www.ntr.ie/companies/ read full story / add a comment

Sinn Féin Councillor Maeve McLaughlin has accused the University of Ulster of double standards after it emerged that the British Army and Royal Navy are to attend a careers fair on Magee Campus while political parties were banned from fresher’s day recently. Councillor McLaughlin said, “At the recent freshers day political parties were not allowed to have leaflet, elected representatives or emblems present. The reason given for this by the Pro Vice Chancellor was that they wanted to create a neutral political environment on the campus. “The attendance of the British Army at a career fair in a city that has seen such outrages as Bloody Sunday carried out by elements within that army does not in any way lend to the creation of a neutral political environment. read full story / add a comment

Below is the first part of interesting article on a move to try and get some money from Shell and other energy companies to pay some of the cost of the environmental damage they cause (followw the link for the rest). While the article makes the point that Shell don't pay nearly enough to make up for the damage they are causing in Britain, here in Ireland we should remeber that there is no tax being paid on their huge profits, since all the costs incurred by SEPIL-everything up to and including the legal costs of prosecuting the Rossport Five- are being wriiten off. Last year the British Finance Minister, Gordon Brown, imposed a windfall tax on the energy companies. Will Brian Cowan impose a windfall tax on Shell to pay for the extra hospital beds we need? To at least offset the cost of the huge Garda occupation force in Mayo? To invest in sustainable energy sources? Maybe he's waiting for someone to suggest it- his phone number is: 01-604 5626 read full story / add a comment
