By Nelson F. Núñez Vergara (*) Ecuador will have presidential elections next month October 15, and election results can stimulate important political changes within the country and a significant effect in the region. According to the latest surveys, the two main candidates are, the leftist Rafael Correa (33%), and Social Democrat Leon Roldós (22%), most likely to continue on into a second round of voting. Electoral norms dictate that a winner gain over 40% of the electorate votes in addition to having a 10% lead over the next closest rival. Correa is presently close to reaching that goal. read full story / add a comment

Three US Iraq War veterans will address an Anti-War Ireland public meeting in Dublin at 7.30pm on Thursday, 26 October. All three served together as interrogators at the infamous Abu-Ghraib prison. Having rejected the war in which they served, they are now active members of Iraq War Veterans Against War. The rejection of the war by three members of the same military unit sends out a powerful message about the growing opposition to this war within the US military. The three veterans are Tony Lagouranis, Joshua Casteel and Stephen Lewis. The meeting, chaired by Deirdre Clancy of Anti-War Ireland, will also be addressed by an AWI speaker. When: 7.30pm, Thursday, 26 October Where: ATGWU Hall, Middle Abbey Street, Dublin. All welcome!! read full story / add a comment

The main article on Shell to Sea this weekend was a repeat of Paul Williams earlier story in the Sunday World last weekend. (see: http://www.indymedia.ie/article/78773) These stories concerned Provo intimidation. This is likely to be a recurring theme so I have a good look at it. Shell to Sea was also smeared by the Sunday Times (again) and Saturday’s Mail. The Mail gave positive coverage earlier in the week. There were decent pieces in the Irish Times and in Village, this article just looks at the negative coverage. read full story / add a comment

national / racism & migration related issues / opinion/analysis Monday October 09, 2006 22:50 by J. Carax
In the last fifteen to twenty years, two new phenomena have finally reached Ireland –Immigration and alongside it - Racism. This is not to say that we Irish never had our prejudices before the ‘blacks’ arrived, back then we were quite happy directing our bigotry and ignorance towards travellers, gays, Jews and Protestants. read full story / add a comment

international / anti-capitalism / feature Monday October 09, 2006 15:09 by Nina López and Maggie Ronayne, Global Women’s Strike
In January of this year we were part of an eight-country Global Women’s Strike delegation to Venezuela from co-ordinating groups in England, Guyana, India, Ireland, Peru, Spain, Uganda, and US – over 70 women and men. Working with the Bolivarian revolution since 2002, our global network took advantage of Caracas hosting the World Social Forum to work together in the heart of the revolution. We wanted as many of us as possible to witness how grassroots communities, beginning with women, are spearheading a revolution and winning back their oil wealth, through an extraordinary relationship with their elected President Hugo Chávez Frías.
