Roadblocks / Checkpoints were set up by Gardaí a few hundred metres either side of Rossport Solidarity Camp, before dawn this morning, to intercept campers on their way to the picket at the Bellanaboy Refinery site. A similar roadblock happened last week also, though this morning's checkpoint was more aggressive with 8 police in two Garda vehicles, ‘quoting’ the Road Traffic Act and demanding names, addresses and dates of birth from drivers and all passengers not previously 'accounted for'. Video and still cameras were also used to film and photograph all involved. Sgt. Conor O'Reilly has been patrolling around the area all day accompanied by a number of Paddywagons, surveying campers and stopping other camp vehicles. Numbers of Gardaí have been seen by local residents today in Glengad and across the bay in Rossport with cameras looking for a view into the camp. read full story / add a comment

In light of our kyoto obligations, the penalties we will incur for exceeding our quota for carbon emissions and our government's policy of letting the polluters off the hook by making the taxpayer shoulder the burden as a stealth tax, Where do industries like Shell fit in to the picture and can we hold them accountable for methane and carbon emissions from their gas production and refinement activities? read full story / add a comment

In a feature by student journalist Susan Cahill, the UCD based College Tribune carried an interesting piece on the rise of alternative media. The article focussed its eye mainly on the main Irish chain in this emerging phenomenon by interviewing a member of the Irish Irish Indymedia Internet Collective, Robbie Sinnott. Left wing UCD students have proven particularly adepth at using adept at using Indymedia to cover their activities over the years, this article will hopefully lead to some more use of the site down in the LG's where it is more common to see tortuous hours spent poring over social networking sites like Bebo. read full story / add a comment

A bus to the Shannon anti-war demo (and back!) will leave Liberty Hall at 9am on the 28th. We're getting quite a bit of interest so we'd encourage people to book their seats now! That'll give us a chance to judge whether a second bus should be ordered.

Return fare is 15 euros (waged) or 10 euros (student/unwaged/low waged).

To book a seat, phone Anthony at 087 068 78 99.

The EU's Enterprise Commissioner Gunther Verheugen said in an interview with the FT this week that EU legislation now costs European business €600 billon (£405 billion) a year, on the basis of a new evaluation of the administrative costs of red tape.

This figure is almost twice the previous estimate of €320bn, and represents 5.5% of total EU GDP. This is the equivalent of the EU losing the entire output of a medium-sized country like Holland every year. read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin last weekend claimed back Omagh British army base by erecting an Irish national flag at the front entrance to the base. The action was part of a demilitarisation protest held at the base as a part of an Ógra Shinn Fein national demilitarisation protest.

Young people from throughout the 32 counties of Ireland and representatives from the troops of movement, the Wolfe Tone society and the SLP also travelled from England for the weekend. It was the fifth annual demilitarisation protest and according to Ógra chairperson in west Tyrone, Barry McNally was held to ‘Claim Victory on the issue of British demilitarisation’ in the county Tyrone Town.

Last Wedneday, when protesters who are opposed to the destructive scheme that Shell and their partners the Irish Government, Statoil, and Marathon Oil want to impose by force on the people of Erris, scaled the roof of Corrib House, they were surprised to find that the building has windows that don't seem to lock.

Several members of Shell's staff tried various options for keeping the window that faces out onto the roof closed, but all proved useless. At one point there were five different men all trying to shut one window (presumably in case one of the scary protesters tried to force their way in through it).

Nobody in the company proved able to mend the broken catch, and as the protest gathered attention, the staff got more and more irritated with the window. Perhaps they realise that the fact that they can't organise window catches that work, doesn't exactly build confidence in their abilities to build and run an extremely high-pressure raw gas pipeline through a bog... read full story / add a comment
