national / rights, freedoms and repression / news report Monday October 16, 2006 01:01 by Shell to Sea
Last Wedneday, when protesters who are opposed to the destructive scheme that Shell and their partners the Irish Government, Statoil, and Marathon Oil want to impose by force on the people of Erris, scaled the roof of Corrib House, they were surprised to find that the building has windows that don't seem to lock. Several members of Shell's staff tried various options for keeping the window that faces out onto the roof closed, but all proved useless. At one point there were five different men all trying to shut one window (presumably in case one of the scary protesters tried to force their way in through it). Nobody in the company proved able to mend the broken catch, and as the protest gathered attention, the staff got more and more irritated with the window. Perhaps they realise that the fact that they can't organise window catches that work, doesn't exactly build confidence in their abilities to build and run an extremely high-pressure raw gas pipeline through a bog... read full story / add a comment

Apparantly ten foot high cannabis plants planted close to together for strictly medicinal export purposes are difficult to burn. Not even White phosophorus (the soldier's friend) will clear a field of grass. This is bad news for Canadian troops attached to NATO in Afghanistan as they must resort to burning the areas with diesel. A very smelly & nauseating noxioum ambience resulting. read full story / add a comment

clare / environment / news report Sunday October 15, 2006 02:18 by Clare Shell to Sea
Last Friday evening Clare Shell to Sea staged a picket outside the local Shell garage in Ennis. This protest was held to show solidarity with the beleaguered people of Erris. With just under twenty people gathering outside the forecourt a spokesman for the group said " this is a great turn out considering the call out was at short notice". Many of the protesters handed out leaflets to passing traffic as most of the drivers beeped the horns in agreement of the sentiment. Although Royal Dutch Shell sold its many retail outlets last year the Shell to Sea campaign has stage many pickets at franchised petrol stations all over the country. This tactic in Ennis was working well on Friday with no motorists stopping to fill up with shell petrol. This picket will continue next Friday after a public meeting in Ennis. The time and venue will be announced soon. read full story / add a comment

"it is laughable to say that in some way Shell has press-ganged the media to its cause" - Daily Mail ShellToSea basher Paul Palmer Learning its lessons from the disaterous PR that resulted from the incarceration of the Rossport 5, Shell has steadily accrued a team of PR companies, gurus, community liasons and external advisors to help it launch a charm offensive with the re-start of work at the site in Bellnaboy. Financial Dynamics (a PR comany were the name says it all really), london PR guru and Tony O'Reilly employee Roy Godson, John Egan, Susan Shannon, Louise McMahon, Christy Loftus (58k a year for 3 years), Padraig Hughes and retired Garda John Carey have all been hired to win over support despite Shells claims that the "Corrib Gas Partners have the consent of the majority". Odd that Shell has to hire these people when they have the support of the majority, Shell could easily save themselves a few quid there. read full story / add a comment
