For those who have not been to a computer fair before, a computer fair is no different from any other market in that it is composed of stalls run by various vendors. Each vendor pays a small fee for the space they occupy and uses it to display and sell their goods. The sale that takes place is a transaction between the vendor and the customer and has nothing to do with the organizer of the fair. read full story / add a comment

Throughout the world, public services have been under attack for the past twenty years. Forming a central plank of the capitalist globalisation agenda, ‘privatisation’ and ‘competition’ are the seemingly unchallenged dogma of modern capitalism. The levels of privatisation which have taken place worldwide are absolutely mindblowing. During the 1990s alone over $900billion worth of public assets were transferred into private hands. Globally this agenda is pushed by the World Bank and the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The basic theory by which these bodies operate is that all decisions should be made on the basis of profitability alone. read full story / add a comment

At the High Court on Monday 31st July, members of Bantry Concerned Action Group were about to issue proceedings under section 160 of the Planning Act against the ESB, arguing that the powerline proposed in Bantry is currently an unauthorised development. The proceedings were providing a welcome respite for protesters to so far have successfully blocked the ESB from continuing work along the route of the powerline. Farmers along the route assisted by members from the Solidarity Camp had successfully blocked numerous efforts by the ESB to off-load poles, bring diggers on-site etc. The exercise, according to the ESB, cost them €15,000 each day, with virtually no results for all their efforts. At time of writing, all machinery and equipment has been removed from the area. read full story / add a comment

After the rally, the group marched through Bantry, stopping for a while outside a hotel being constructed by Murnane and O'Shea, the businessmen behind the windfarm project who are demanding that overhead powerlines cross 40 farms over a 14km route read full story / add a comment

Farmers in Bantry have were astonished to find a letter in the planning office from Mary Coughlan, Minister for Agriculture making representations on behalf of Bob Murnane who is currently seeking planning permission to extend the size of a controversial windfarm near Bantry. From Madrid to Buenos Aires, from Caracas to la Paz, throughout the spanish speaking world - governments and political representatives send messages of "get well soon!" to Fidel Castro who has now placed the ink stamp of leadership in the hands of his younger brother Raul. The health of Fidel Castro is intrinsically tied to the health of the state of Cuba. & he's an old man now just short of his 80th birthday. He is in fact the "grand old man". & his death will see many changes long expected and equally as long feared. Already Cuban exile groups mostly found in Florida USA, led by the charismatic Gloria Estafan have announced plans to democratise the state when he goes, and modernise it in the best shiney way turning the clock back as far it will go. read full story / add a comment
