international / racism & migration related issues / news report Tuesday August 08, 2006 11:52 by iosaf
The second week of August is the peak vacation week for citizens of the EU. Over 200 million EU citizens are not presently at their usual workplace or abode. Many (but not all) choose sunny destinations with the Mediterranean coast and the various EU archipelagoes enduring in popularity. Of course, not all EU citizens enjoy the fun, the month of August annually sees the most lay-offs and timed bankruptcies in continental Europe, whilst both law firms and trade unions are temporarily unavailable to help or counsel the "shafted workers". August and summer also see precarity peak, there is undoubtedly much employment available in tourist sectors but the pay is low and security non-existent. August also sees the influx of African migrants peak. A short article on "spoiling your holidays". read full story / add a comment

cork / anti-war / imperialism / news report Tuesday August 08, 2006 01:33 by Anti-War Ireland (Cork branch)
About 70 people turned out at 2pm on Saturday at Daunt Square in Cork for a vigil in solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinian people, and in opposition to the widespread and devastating Israeli military attacks on civilians. Organised by the Cork branches of Anti-War Ireland, the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the IAWM, the attendance was diverse, and included members of a variety of left-wing groups. Hundreds of Anti-War Ireland leaflets were handed out, calling for workplace and trade union 'blacking' of Israeli goods. The reaction from passers by was overwhelmingly positive and many promised not to buy Israeli products in future. Cork AWI has also produced stickers urging people to boycott Israeli products and these have begun to appear throughout the city centre. read full story / add a comment

On Sunday 6th of August 2006 the Unmanageables laid flowers on the Hiroshima memorial stone in Merrion Square. They used child-sized puppets to draw attention to fact that children have been the main victems of the war in Lebanon. A letter was handed into the Taoseach's office calling on him to get off the fence and condem the war. Afterwards the Unmanageables held a fifteen minute vigil outside the Israeli Embassy read full story / add a comment

If you think of North Antrim, or Indeed Ireland, then the first natural wonder that you think about is the Giant's Causeway. This was one of only a number of events held at in North Antrim this weekend. North Antrim Ógra Shinn Féin organised a very successful, packed weekend of events recently (4-6 August). read full story / add a comment

national / environment / news report Sunday August 06, 2006 17:36 by Shell to Sea
Shell to Sea went among the crowds attending the All-Ireland Semi Final between Waterford and Cork today, asking for donations and giving out leaflets, information on the campaign, and the ubiquitous Shell to Sea stickers. The response amongst the sports fans was overwhelmingly positive, and the large amnounts of money raised will go towards more leaflets, protests and public meetings in the future. Latest reports sugges that Shell will attempt to start building work at their proposed refinery site Bellinaboy at the end of thiis month or iin early September, using the confusion sown by their recent announcement that they are to "re-route" the pipeline to give them an advantage over the resistance networks around the country who will be trying to galvanise protests against them. This means that Shell to Sea have a month to alert the public that the "re-route" is an empty public relations exercise, and the root of the problem, like the route of the pipeline, hasn't changed. read full story / add a comment

This was the front page of Scotland’s Sunday Herald on 30th July 2006. The Irish Government propaganda machine would have the Scottish population believe that no US military flights are allowed through Irish airports. “Dermot Ahern, the Irish foreign affairs minister, said he would block any attempt by the US to transport arms to Israel through his county.” Most interesting is the total absence of any reference to the fact that Ireland allows US military flights through Shannon airport and the recent court victory of the Pitstop Ploughshares. read full story / add a comment

"Sin City," ? only when Ahern and coven come to Galway for the races and a serious outbreak of brown envelopery consequently emanates from the Ballybrit "Hospitality Tent" which can only be controlled by CAB?. "Sin City"," nah !, 'cos sometimes, in moments of weakness, Galway is referred to as the New Jerusalem,? true.
